About Smart Data X You Exhibition
Smart Data X You, From the origin of data to smart applications. This exhibition in the House of Digitalisation in Tulln, Austria, features an overall didactic concept that guides visitors through the narrative in a comprehensible way. Eight multimedia stations explain how data is created and processed. Design Studio Responsive Spaces was tasked with the creation, design and development of this immersive exhibition. They made the interconnectedness of everybody's digital environment tangible and provided visitors with low-barrier knowledge from the world of smart data utilizing interactivity.
Responsive Spaces's Smart Data X You Exhibition represents a significant achievement in contemporary exhibition design, positioning itself within the evolving tradition of immersive spatial experiences that seek to render visible the invisible infrastructures of data that increasingly shape human existence. The installation demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how physical and digital elements might be orchestrated to create environments of discovery and contemplation, employing an illuminated architectural city model as a tangible entry point before expanding into vast projected environments that suggest infinite data landscapes. The technical accomplishment evident throughout reveals mastery of multiple disciplines including architectural lighting design, digital projection mapping, interactive interface development, and spatial choreography, all unified through a cohesive visual language of cool luminosity punctuated by warm data nodes. The chromatic strategy proves particularly noteworthy, establishing emotional and conceptual frameworks through temperature relationships where cool blues and cyans suggest technological infrastructure while amber and golden points evoke the warmth of human activity and meaning within those systems. Compositionally, the work orchestrates visitor movement and attention through careful placement of interactive stations and visual focal points, creating multiple simultaneous experiences while maintaining overall environmental coherence. The suspended graphic panels and informational elements provide necessary didactic content without disrupting the immersive quality of the spatial experience, demonstrating sophisticated integration of educational and experiential exhibition modes. The exposed theatrical infrastructure overhead serves both practical and philosophical functions, supporting the technical requirements while acknowledging the constructed nature of the immersive environment in keeping with contemporary transparency in exhibition practice. Thematically, the installation appears to explore the relationship between individual human experience and collective data systems, positioning visitors as active participants within information ecosystems rather than passive recipients of predetermined content. The presence of engaged visitors within the documented installation underscores this participatory emphasis, their absorbed postures suggesting successful activation of contemplative engagement. One might consider how such immersive data visualizations function as contemporary forms of cosmic or metropolitan contemplation, inviting reflection on human positioning within vast interconnected systems.

- Production Technology
- 8 state-of-the-art multimedia station with all different interface approaches build the core of this immersive exhibition. Additionally, there is a over 70 meter long LED wall surrounding the whole space. All exhibits and the LED wall are connected in realtime and are reacting to each other.
On the software side, mainly vvvv and Unity3D have been used. - Design Challenge
- The biggest challenges were the facts that there was going to be very broad target groups and a rather complex exhibition topic, smart data. The existing showroom and its technology needed to be utilized in a completly new way to deliver a true experience that empowers the overall brand of the house of digitalization, that hosts the exhibition.
Connecting all exhibits in an understandable and entertaining way, visually and in functionality, was as important as delivering education to all visitors. - Project Duration
- The project started in April of 2023 and the exhibition opened on the 31st of January 2024 in Tulln, Lower Austria, Austria.
- Operation Flow
- For examples: If a visitor is exploring a particular aspect of the origin of big data, such as health data, then the overarching narrative shown on the 360-degree-Led-wall is also showing more health data
- Research
- The whole exhibition was curated and design based upon internal research of all topics smart data.
The goal from the beginning was, to create a exhibition that addresses a very broad target group, ranging from grammar school classes to senior citizens. It should also be able to entertain people who are feeling native with digital technologies as well as people that are less affine. - Inspiration
- We wanted to combine our love for design, experience and technology. The goal was to create a exhibition that impresses and educates alike. Being located inside the House of Digitalisation, we wanted every visitor to feel the possibilities of digitalization and therefore we created all exhibits with real-time content and connected them. Every interaction at every possible point of the exhibition influences the whole state of the showroom, therefore making digitalization omnipresent.
