About Sfumato Shelving System

Sfumato is a modular shelving system for living and office spaces. The outline of Sfumato recalls an urban skyline, wide and solid at the bottom, fragmented at the top, with a continuous horizontal base. Modules of different heights and depths are combined to create many configurations and sizes. The system can stand alone or be mounted on a wall. Open shelves display small objects, while closed doors conceal them. The body, shelves, partitions and front panels are made of MDF with a matt lacquer finish.

Nedim Mutevelic's Sfumato Shelving System emerges from a rich tradition of modular furniture design that traces its lineage through the rational geometries of early twentieth-century modernism while embracing a distinctly contemporary sensibility attuned to the complexities of domestic and professional environments. The system's nomenclature itself signals an ambitious conceptual framework, invoking Leonardo da Vinci's celebrated technique of graduated tonal transitions to describe the vertical progression from solid enclosed volumes at the base to increasingly ethereal open frameworks ascending above, a journey from material density toward spatial transparency that mirrors the sfumato dissolution of hard edges into atmospheric softness. This graduated dematerialization invites contemplation of fundamental architectural and philosophical dualities: containment and exposure, privacy and display, the functional necessity of storage and the aesthetic desire for visual lightness. The proportional system governing the rectangular apertures within the metal frameworks appears to follow an intuitive rather than strictly mathematical logic, achieving a composed irregularity reminiscent of vernacular building traditions or the organic accumulations of structures evolving across time. Such asymmetry rewards sustained visual engagement, as the eye discovers unexpected rhythmic relationships and proportional conversations between adjacent openings. The chromatic program demonstrates sophisticated restraint, with the pristine white configuration offering crisp clarity while the warm taupe and bronze variants suggest natural materials and timeworn surfaces, expanding the system's adaptability across diverse interior contexts from minimalist contemporary spaces to environments seeking warmer organic resonance. The visible metal profiles achieve remarkable slenderness while maintaining structural integrity, resulting in frameworks that read almost as three-dimensional drawings, geometric diagrams rendered in physical space. One might observe how the design successfully negotiates the tension between standardization, necessary for modular flexibility, and individual expression, achieved through the varied configurations and chromatic options presented. How might this graduated transition from solidity to openness reflect our own psychological needs for both security and freedom within inhabited space?

Unique Properties
The dynamic outline of this shelf system evokes the skyline of an urban landscape – spacious and massive at the bottom, broken and fragmented at the top, with a continuous horizontal base. Different configurations and dimensions are realized through the simple combining of the modules.

Sfumato is a modular, stand-alone or wall shelf system for your small items. Those you want to exhibit or hide, either with a play of shadows or closed doors.

Design Challenge
The hardest part of design was to find a visual language for modular system that would make the seamless whole, in any case of composition of three or more elements.
Project Duration
The project started at the beginning of 2018 in Sarajevo (B&H) and Djakovo (Croatia), and was produced in Djakovo (Croatia) during 2018, list of fairs and exhibitions:

IMM, Cologne (Germany) in January 2019

BIG SEE AWARD - MONTH OF DESIGN, Ljubljana (Slovenia) in October 2019
AMBIENTA, Furniture Fair, Zagreb (Croatia) in October 2019
BFF, Belgrade (Serbia) in November 2019
AMBIENT Fair, Ljubljana (Slovenia) in November 2019
IMM, Cologne (Germany) in January 2020

and was planned to be presented at
SALONE DEL MOBILE, Milano (Italy) in April 2020

Awarded Big See Product Design Award 2019
Operation Flow
For Living and Office spaces. It interacts with walls or empty space behind by not having the straight top line but having the dynamic appearance.
Research
The main research was focused visual language for modular system that would make the seamless whole, in any case of composition of three or more elements.
Inspiration
Scaled and stylized, visually-compelling reflection of metropolis for contemporary indoor spaces. Stable and hard on bottom, blurred and soft on top, continuous and endless horizontally...

The dynamic structure with various heights, depths and transparencies creates apartments with different atmospheres, required by Sfumato residents - various everyday objects.
