About Ryad Private Garden

The challenge consisted in modernizing an old country house and turns it into a realm of peace and quiet, comprehensively working both on the architectural and landscape areas. The facade was renewed, civil work was did on the pavings and the swimmimg pool and retaining walls were built, creating new forge ironworks for the archways, walls and fences. Gardening, irrigation and the reservoir, as well as lightning, furniture and accessories were also comprehensively delt with.

Fernando Pozuelo's Private Garden represents a distinguished contribution to the contemporary interpretation of the historic paradise garden tradition, a lineage extending through centuries of enclosed garden design that sought to create earthly reflections of celestial perfection. The work demonstrates exceptional command of axial planning, employing a strong central spine that organizes diverse programmatic elements into coherent visual and experiential sequence while honoring the symmetrical principles fundamental to classical garden composition. The designer's chromatic sensitivity emerges through the orchestrated interplay between artificial illumination and natural twilight, where warm amber lantern light creates intimate human-scaled moments against the expansive cool blue of evening sky, achieving a thermal contrast that heightens sensory engagement. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precise integration of hardscape geometry with organic planting masses, the reflective water channels that double the visual impact of pathway lighting, and the theatrical uplighting of mature trees that transforms functional specimens into sculptural focal points. The incorporation of Moorish-inspired decorative elements, particularly the intricate metalwork lanterns and the culminating tower structure, suggests dialogue with the rich heritage of courtyard gardens where architecture and horticulture merged to create contemplative retreats from worldly concerns. Thematic resonances of sanctuary, threshold between day and night, and the cultivation of beauty through careful stewardship pervade the composition. The work invites consideration of how designed landscapes might serve as mediating spaces between the built environment and natural world, offering contemporary inhabitants the timeless gift of refuge. One might contemplate how the interplay of geometric order and organic growth reflects broader human aspirations to harmonize rational understanding with natural wonder.

Unique Properties
We turned this enormous 3000 square meters terrain into a nazari style garden, a space that communicates the peace and inspiration that our customers were searching. Our project involved the renovation of the swimming pool, the floorings and the entry side, as well as new painting for the facade and restyling with new ironwork and archways with fabric that produce an arabic atmosphere. We also did comprehensive work in gardening, watering and lightning.

Production Technology
We decided to design a classic cross-shaped pattern; this was repeated on the lighting structures (arabic light-beacons, hanging lamps and backlighted archways) that also appear in the bas-relieves placed on the forge retaining walls, adding a Classic Renaissance structure with a Nazari canal along it.
Regarding the arboreal plant material, we used different species, such as holm, cypress, orange, pomegranate and palm trees, also bushes like lavender, thyme and jasmine, and finally, more flowery and grassy species like daisy, periwinkle and fresh mint.
Design Challenge
The pool was a basic element in this design. Our intention was to have it play the role of a pond, with stones placed all around and water cascading in laminar flows. This very flow will lead us to the upper area of the garden, where one finds new emerging springs and the arab light towers are placed. That is the point where our sight reachs to the sky and, by night fall, the stars can be seen, hence achieving the spiritual uplifting which is the main goal of this garden, never losing the focus on efficiency and sustainability: we reduced the need of maintenance and hydric consumption up to 40%.
Project Duration
The project started in May 2016 and for four months we were working in our studio. In july 2016 the production process begins and it last for twelve months. The project finished in July 2017.
Operation Flow
Leaving aside the technical aspects of the work, we must emphasize that the whole complex is embedded by our literary narrative, a story in which the proprietors play an essential part, hence achieving the final goal of our work: that the estate and the project conform a lasting legacy.
Research
We created a unique and natural ambience, using water as a guiding theme that brings serenity to the whole. We used water in laminar flows, having it slide through a small ditch leading to the pool. Same as in Alhambra, flowing water provides a soothing rumor, refreshes the air and, by the design of the ditches, draws lines with different perspectives that vertebrate the space and provide leaking paths and escape lines.
We went for a mediterranean vegetation, with noble and classic trees like cypress, granate and orange trees, enhancing their poetic essence with bushes and aromatic plants.
Inspiration
Our main wager was recreating the owners' dream; Spanish citizens, with deep Hispanic roots which they do not want to forget, their aim was to enjoy the tranquility, the light, color and aromas typical to a Nazari garden. This lead us to think of a unique garden, creating a gorgeous compound, housing this delicate mixture between Hispanic and Muslim cultures, as a symbol of Peace among them.

We faced the challenge of modernizing an old country house and turn it into a realm of peace and quiet, which we did by comprehensively working both on the architectural and landscape areas. We renewed the façade, did civil work on the pavings and the swimmimg pool and built retaining walls, creating new forge ironworks for the archways, walls and fences. Gardening, irrigation and the reservoir, as well as lightning, furniture and accessories were also comprehensively delt with.

This garden was a dream come true for the owners. The team of Fernando Pozuelo, firm believers in the power of dreams themselves, rest assured that this particular dream was fully achieved, not merely through aesthetics and harmony: a landscape symbolizing peace between two cultures through beauty has been created.

Leaving aside the technical aspects of the work, we must emphasize that the whole complex is embedded by our literary narrative, a story in which the proprietors play an essential part, hence achieving the final goal of our work: that the estate and the project conform a lasting legacy.

The name «Ryad» was chosen because, in Arabic, it means garden, a pleasant, peaceful place, and oasis where there are little creeks, where there is water, where there is health and life.

We decided to design a classic cross-shaped pattern; this was repeated on the lighting structures (arabic light-beacons, hanging lamps and backlighted archways, in a dialogue with epigraphic inscriptions resembling the Kufic from the Alhambra) that also appear in the bas-relieves placed on the forge retaining walls, adding a Classic Renaissance structure with a lawn area in the shape of a cross and with a Nazari canal along it, and we built different axis points, in order to get different perspectives of the garden.

We found big holm oaks on the state but the house was on a lower level, so we decided to divide the work in both levels; this way, the lower one would serve for the home needs -enlarged by the distinct panoramic set by the ditch extending from east to west- and left the upper level as spare garden and miscellaneous use area, setting the focus on three lamp towers (Almenaras) between 9 and 15 feet high each.
