About Ruyi Exhibition Center

Ruyi is an exhibition centre located in the Longhu Financial Centre in Zhengzhou, China. The form of the building is based on Ruyi, a ceremonial sceptre that is a traditional symbol of good fortune in China. A steel structure creates the curved shape of the building. The entire facade is covered with white aluminium plates. Each plate is shaped into a curve with a different arc through precise calculation. The plates are joined to form a streamlined surface. The building covers an area of 1800 square metres and acts as a landmark within the financial district.

Kris Lin's Ruyi Exhibition Center represents a distinguished achievement within the evolving tradition of parametric and organic modernist architecture, demonstrating how computational design methodologies can produce built environments that appear to transcend the conventional boundaries between structure and sculpture. The architect's sophisticated manipulation of the continuous facade creates what might be understood as an architectural interpretation of fluidity frozen in material form, evoking perhaps the graceful curvature of traditional jade ruyi scepters while simultaneously engaging contemporary discourses around biomimicry and topological architecture. The composition's technical accomplishment resides particularly in the seamless integration of apparently contradictory formal languages: the precise linearity of the ribbon glazing systems, the organic undulation of the primary envelope, and the geometric rationality of the plaza paving exist in harmonious dialogue rather than conflict. One notes with appreciation how the central portal creates both a literal threshold and a symbolic invitation, its warm interior luminosity suggesting welcome and discovery while the elliptical form introduces an element of mystery regarding the spaces concealed within. The twilight atmospheric conditions captured in this documentation heighten the work's poetic dimensions, as the building appears to exist in that liminal temporal space between day and night when architectural forms seem to acquire heightened presence and meaning. The integration of mature landscape elements at the composition's margins suggests a thoughtful approach to contextual sensitivity, the organic forms of the trees finding unexpected resonance with the building's own organic geometries. Viewers might consider how this structure proposes new relationships between the built and natural environments, between technological innovation and timeless formal beauty, and between the monumental aspirations of public architecture and the intimate scale of human experience.

Inspiration
The project design is inspired by the image of Ruyi. Ruyi, a ceremonial sceptre, as the name implies, everything goes well, is the traditional auspicious object for Chinese people. In ancient times, when the emperor met with foreign envoys, he also gave Ruyi as a sign of respect and friendship between the two countries.
