About Rong Tea Edge Cabinet

Rong is a tea sideboard designed for home use. Rong is made of North American black walnut with a clear wood grain. A double-layer octagonal countertop and herringbone struts divide the functional areas by shape. The cabinet body has grille strip sliding doors that move along a track, so no space is needed in front of the unit. Multiple storage areas keep different tea sets in order. The concave countertop surface and the pressure center placed behind the center of gravity prevent tipping. Simple components allow users to assemble the sideboard themselves.

Jun Zhang's Rong Tea Edge Cabinet emerges from a design philosophy that harmonizes Eastern contemplative traditions with Western modernist clarity, positioning itself within a lineage of furniture conceived not merely as functional object but as participant in domestic ritual, the work demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to material expression through its use of ebonized ash whose darkened surface simultaneously honors the wood's natural grain while achieving the visual gravitas traditionally associated with ceremonial objects, the tambour door treatment represents a particularly accomplished formal decision as the vertical reeding creates a surface that appears to breathe with light, transforming what could be static storage into dynamic visual experience, compositionally the cabinet achieves remarkable balance between transparency and enclosure as the open A-frame structure allows visual and literal passage of air and light while the central volume provides necessary concealment for tea implements and precious objects, the elevated stance on gracefully tapered legs suggests reverence for the floor plane characteristic of certain Asian furniture traditions while the overall silhouette recalls the rational geometries that Scandinavian designers employed to democratize elegance, brass hardware elements serve both functional and symbolic purposes their warm luminosity providing necessary contrast against dark wood while suggesting the precious nature of what lies within, the proportional relationships throughout demonstrate careful calibration with the upper serving surface establishing a horizontal datum that organizes the composition into zones of openness and density, this piece invites consideration of how contemporary design might honor craft heritage while speaking in distinctly present vocabularies, viewers might contemplate what rituals of their own domestic lives deserve such thoughtful material accompaniment

Design Challenge
Compared with homogenized competitors, this product conveys a new interpretation of tea sideboards, showing admiration to simplicity and restraint. By eliminating the bulky square cabinet-style structure, it adopts a double-layer octagonal countertop with the body that has grille strip sliding doors and is supported by herringbone struts on the side to form a unique style. Different functional areas also offer multifunctional storage solutions to satisfy users’ needs.
Project Duration
Launched in February 2023 and completed in May 2023 in Hangzhou.
Operation Flow
Equipped with grille strip sliding doors, it allows users to easily open and close along the track with the full display of the wood grain. This not only saves the space but also presents a light and elegant beauty. The double-layer countertop treated with a concave surface, and the center of pressure of the countertop positioned behind the center of gravity prevent falling issues. The simple components allow users to assemble the product themselves.
Research
Traditional wooden home sideboards often have a square and heavy appearance, lacking a sense of mobility. Moreover, their doors are mainly drawn and opened, which takes up a lot of space when opening, making it an improper choice for small-sized dwellings. Thus, the design team chose the refined black walnut and endowed the product with a simple and versatile design. The storage cabinet uses grille strip sliding doors, which can be opened and closed with easy push and pull on both sides.
Inspiration
Inspired by modern tea lovers, the tea sideboard focuses on the aesthetics of the tea-making environment and the storage functions. The team simplified the design with simple components to create an extremely simple and elegant tea sideboard. The overall material adopts North American black walnut with clear wood grains, adding a natural touch. The double-layer countertop and sideboard body ensure sufficient storage space, rendering a sense of order for different tea sets.
