About Romexis 6 Dental Imaging Software

Romexis 6 is dental imaging software created for dental professionals. Romexis 6 allows capturing, viewing and processing X-rays, three-dimensional images, photos and videos within one system. A fully redesigned user interface simplifies many functions into a clear and customisable workspace. Experienced users can adapt workflows to their own preferences. New users can follow Workflow Wizards, which give step-by-step guidance through short videos and texts. The software runs on a standard computer or as a networked platform.

Romexis 6 Dental Imaging Software by Planmeca exemplifies the sophisticated convergence of medical visualization technology and thoughtful interface design that characterizes contemporary diagnostic imaging systems. This software environment demonstrates how complex three-dimensional anatomical data can be presented with both scientific accuracy and visual clarity, positioning volumetric rendering as both diagnostic tool and navigational anchor within a carefully orchestrated workspace. The interface architecture reflects established principles of medical software design while introducing refinements in visual hierarchy and chromatic organization that enhance clinical workflow efficiency. The warm amber palette applied to the skull rendering suggests a considered departure from purely clinical grayscale conventions, potentially serving to reduce visual fatigue during extended diagnostic sessions while maintaining accurate structural representation. The tripartite arrangement of cross-sectional views employs color-coded framing that immediately communicates spatial orientation—a design decision rooted in established medical imaging conventions yet executed with particular attention to chromatic harmony and visual balance. Technical achievement is evident in the rendering quality, which captures subtle variations in bone density, dental morphology, and anatomical landmark definition with remarkable fidelity. The control panel organization demonstrates understanding of clinical workflow priorities, grouping adjustment parameters, annotation tools, and rendering options in logical proximity relationships. This work invites contemplation of how diagnostic technology can serve both functional requirements and the human experience of medical practice, suggesting that precision and approachability need not exist in opposition within healthcare visualization environments.

Unique Properties
The unique strength of Romexis is that it allows capturing, viewing and processing all types of imaging data (incl. X-rays, 3D images, photos and videos) in one and the same system. In Romexis 6, we wanted to build on this idea with a fresh user interface which puts the user in charge. The customisable look and range of available tools are designed to make workflows efficient and clutter-free and to allow treatment professionals to be confident in their work.
Dimensions & Packaging
Romexis is designed to work as stand-alone software on a standard PC or as a networked software platform. It is intended for a wide range of dental professionals, including dentists, dental surgeons and radiologists, and can be used to retrieve, process, render, diagnose, review, store and share images of adult and pediatric patients. It can also be used for simulating/evaluating surgical treatment options and to design models, guides and splints for maxillofacial surgery.

Production Technology
Different design concepts were explored through hundreds of user interface sketches and mockups, which were then tested extensively in cooperation with a broad range of dental professionals and specialists. The design work was done using the Sketch and Adobe XD design tools, while the software was developed in Java.
Design Challenge
The working practices and preferences of dental professionals can vary greatly on both an individual and global level. At the same time, dental professionals work in a demanding environment, in which actions and errors directly impact diagnostics and treatment. Responding to both of these challenges in one, user-oriented software solution was the driving ambition and vision which resulted in Romexis 6.
Project Duration
Started in 2018 in the Planmeca HQ in Helsinki and major release will be in May 2020.
Operation Flow
One key innovation of Romexis 6 is its ability to accommodate both new and advanced users. While experienced users can personalise their workflows as they prefer, less experienced ones can take advantage of the all-new Workflow Wizards. Using quick videos and helpful texts, the Wizards offer step-by-step guidance which allows performing even advanced tasks with ease. Meanwhile, the software interface remains active to allow the user to leave the Wizard and learn at their own pace.
Research
The project began by collecting as much quantitative data as possible through surveys with dental professionals and Romexis users. The results were then compared to qualitative data from follow-up interviews and field observations to gain an understanding of different users and their practices. Additionally, clickable prototypes were used to gather feedback before the development stage. The insights gained formed the design principles which guided the development of Planmeca Romexis 6.
Inspiration
Some software solutions equate usability with predetermined workflows and limited options for customisation. We took a different approach. For Romexis 6, we wanted to do a complete user interface redesign in order to make a technically complex product more intuitive and able to adapt to different specialist workflows as well as individual preferences.

Design Interview about Romexis 6 Dental Imaging Software

We did extensive research on how users use the product and listened and observed very carefully what were the most common pain points users faced. From this we derived insights that offered easy solutions for the first time users to learn the software and for the experienced users to have more customisation options.

We wanted it to have clear visual appearance to keep the dentist or nurse focused on the task at hand. Subtle, unobtrusive graphics, familiar conventions and predictable behaviours where favoured over flamboyant style. Style vice we didn’t want to go all flat with the design language and we also wanted it to be easily translatable to other applications as this was the basis and first user interface for the new company wide design system.

We will keep collecting information of its use and make it even better with every sprint.

The concept phase took about a year and from there it got revised for multiple times and now after 2,5 years of continuous work we are ready to release the Planmeca Romexis 6.0 version to the market.

The Romexis software allows capturing, viewing and processing all types of data in the same system – with all 2D and 3D images and CAD/CAM cases in the same database. The software has extensive specialist tools, real-time monitoring possibilities, and unique connectivity with Planmeca equipment, we wanted to make all of the interactions and workflows for these as easy as possible.

The software is released, and we are selling it through our dealer network throughout the world.

Work was mainly designed by our lead UI/UX designer Antti Eloheimo, but design is a team effort and everyone in the team contributed to the outcome

Mainly for dentistry professionals, but this same software can be used for medical and veterinary purposes also.

It has superior usability and all-in-one approach where 2D, 3D and CAD/CAM needs are met with single software, all the other competitor have these in specialties in different software’s and overall workflow is not as fast. Romexis is also an open platform that works seamlessly with industry standards.

Design was done on Sketch app and developed with Java.

Romexis is the most powerful dental software platform in the world. It offers a rich selection of tools and features for all needs and specialities. Romexis brings together all the equipment at a dental clinic – from CAD/CAM technology to imaging devices and dental units. Seeing all the patient data from one location and the possibility to interact with any of it with just one click sets this design in its own league.

Design quality of Romexis is based on continuous user experience research that incorporates behavioural, attitudinal, quantitative and qualitative data collection.

Balancing and prioritizing vastly different user needs in a software that has multiple use cases.
