About Rizhao Bailuwan Cherry Blossom Town Art and Cultural Space

Rizhao Bailuwan Cherry Blossom Town is a park landscape design in Rizhao, China. The design respects the natural mountain setting and the character of the existing orchard. Three elements define the site. A pure cherry orchard is elevated above the ground. Curved textured walls, built from local granite boulders found on the site, blur the boundary between vertical wall and horizontal path. Winding roads covered with cherry blossom petals complete the impression of a forest valley. Local craftsmen shaped the stone with traditional techniques.

Within the contemporary discourse of landscape architecture that seeks meaningful dialogue between cultural memory and ecological sensitivity, this award-winning design by Hu Sun demonstrates exceptional mastery in transforming challenging topography into experiential poetry through the deployment of vernacular construction techniques elevated to artistic expression. The serpentine dry-stone walls, constructed without mortar in a tradition stretching back millennia across agrarian cultures worldwide, here transcend their utilitarian origins as retaining structures to become the primary compositional armature defining spatial sequence and emotional resonance. The designer appears to engage with both East Asian garden philosophy, wherein the journey matters more than the destination, and land art sensibilities that treat earthworks as monumental sculpture experienced through bodily movement. The chromatic strategy proves particularly accomplished, orchestrating the warm mineral palette of locally sourced stone against the ephemeral glory of cherry blossoms at peak flowering, creating a temporal experience that celebrates the fleeting beauty celebrated in hanami traditions. Technical analysis reveals sophisticated understanding of how curvilinear forms create varying degrees of spatial compression and release, generating anticipation and reward as visitors traverse the winding path. The inclusion of a single figure serves multiple purposes: establishing human scale within the vast planting scheme, demonstrating the designed pathway experience, and invoking the universal theme of the solitary journey through nature. One might observe how the elevated viewing angle reveals the plan geometry while simultaneously preserving the mystery of what lies beyond each curve, inviting continued exploration. The work demonstrates how traditional craft, contemporary spatial thinking, and horticultural knowledge can synthesize into environments that nourish both cultural continuity and sensory delight. What memories or associations does the experience of moving through such a blossoming landscape evoke for the viewer?

Production Technology
Rubble, is a witness to the era of the change of site. We use the rough stone which is originally from the site and process it into stone veneer. Local craftsmen use traditional techniques and modern expressions to take the locality. People and nature are guarding this place in the same way.
Design Challenge
Big steep, bare rock, yellow land......We soothed the abused mountain and paid our respects.
The site is inherently spiritual, and only by means of "rooting" can it not be destroyed and the original spirit of the site can be retained to the greatest extent.
Project Duration
The project started in 2019 and completed the construction of the entrance and park in 2020 in Rizhao, Qingdao.
Operation Flow
In the spirit of “take root” in the site, the strategy of landscape and earth is adopted. Taking a continue epidermis method to blurry the boundary, in an uncommon dimension, it breathes and grows together with the earth.
Research
What is the relationship between the landscape and the land? From our point of view, they should be like "a nail pierced into the earth", as whole, not individual parts.
There is no subjective and arbitrary speculation, but to follow the clues provided by the site and continue to inherit the spirit of the site in a brand-new form.
Inspiration
“I desire to feel something that the inherent tensions drives and comes from the original site.” In the current market, placing the same design system on different sites without distinction is not a rare move. We reject such crude copying, and strive to intervene in the site with a “take root” mentality. This means we take the situation of the site in the first place, to think of the materials that we have before taking actions in design.
