About Ringo Gamaguchi Clasp Purse
This product takes the shape of an apple because it is crafted from Ringo Tex, a synthetic leather derived from apple waste. Its dimensions are based on the size of a real small apple, emphasizing its origin. Its main feature is its slimness, not usually seen among clasp purses. This was achieved by adopting a sewing approach different from conventional purses, allowing the structure to remain thin. The intention was to create a product that can easily fit into bags or pockets, allowing coins and other small items to be carried smartly without adding much bulk.
Yutaro Kumagai's Ringo Gamaguchi Clasp Purse demonstrates the enduring vitality of traditional gamaguchi kiss-lock purse construction reimagined through contemporary minimalist sensibility and playful biomorphic reference, situating itself within lineages of craft-based design that honor vernacular functional forms while pursuing aesthetic refinement and conceptual wit, the gamaguchi typology itself carries deep cultural heritage as a clasp-closure system that achieved widespread adoption throughout the twentieth century for its satisfying mechanical operation and secure yet accessible opening mechanism, the distinctive kiss-lock with its dual spherical knobs and hinged frame created both functional efficiency and tactile pleasure, transforming the mundane act of opening a purse into a small ceremonial gesture, Kumagai's interpretation honors this functional tradition while introducing formal innovation through the deliberate morphological reference to pomaceous fruit, specifically the apple suggested by the bilobed spherical silhouette with its characteristic upper indentation and rounded lower hemisphere, this nature citation operates simultaneously as visual delight and symbolic enrichment, the apple form carrying millennia of cultural associations with knowledge, temptation, health, abundance, and everyday sustenance, the compositional achievement lies in the precise calibration of proportion and curve that makes the fruit reference legible without becoming literal caricature, the subtle bilateral symmetry and organic asymmetries create visual authenticity that respects both the fruit archetype and the functional demands of the purse structure, the chromatic choice of deep burgundy leather enriches the fruit association while maintaining sophisticated restraint, this wine-red tonality suggesting autumnal ripeness and mature depth rather than bright primary simplicity, the monochromatic approach focuses attention on form and material quality rather than chromatic complexity, while the warm metallic hardware in polished brass or rose-gold finish provides essential accent and temperature contrast, technical execution reveals meticulous leatherworking craft with fine-grain hide selected for its ability to hold dimensional form while maintaining supple hand, the visible topstitching that articulates seam lines and structural panels demonstrates precision needlework that serves both functional assembly and decorative linear patterning, these stitching lines create subtle geometric armature across the curved surface that reinforces the spherical volume while revealing the constructed nature of the organic form, the kiss-lock clasp mechanism itself represents precision metalworking with mirror-polished surfaces and exact spherical geometry, the two teardrop-shaped metal elements positioned on the lower body introduce additional punctuation and suggest facial features, eyes or beauty marks that anthropomorphize the object and enhance its character as companionable rather than merely utilitarian, the work participates in contemporary craft-design discourse that questions hierarchies between fine art and functional object, autonomous sculpture and everyday accessory, proposing that quotidian items warrant the formal attention, material investment, and conceptual development traditionally reserved for gallery art, this democratic impulse echoes midcentury Scandinavian and Bauhaus philosophies of good design for daily life, while the playful biomorphic reference connects to surrealist traditions of object transformation and the contemporary renewed interest in nature-inspired organic geometry as counterpoint to digital rectilinearity, the piece invites consideration of how we invest meaning and affection in carried objects, how accessories function as intimate companions in daily movement through the world, and how thoughtful design transforms pragmatic necessity into aesthetic pleasure and emotional resonance, what desires and values does the choice of an apple-shaped purse express, what joy might attend the small ritual of opening its kiss-lock clasp, how does whimsy coexist with refinement in objects of everyday elegance.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- This clasp purse utilizes "Ringo-Tex" a bio-based leather developed by appcycle Inc. in Aomori, Japan's largest apple producing region. Around 20,000 tons of apple residue is produced each year, much of it discarded or incinerated, contributing to CO2 emissions. "Ringo-Tex" upcycles this waste into synthetic leather through a low-carbon stabilization process. Molded into a 3D apple form expressing it's origin uniting symbolism and craftsmanship while inviting participation in a sustainable society.

- Production Technology
- The product is built from four key materials, a clasp frame, "Ringo Tex" bio based leather, an electroformed nameplate, and lining. While the clasp is standard, molding "Ringo Tex" is far more demanding than working with genuine leather and required six months of research. Stitching along the complex contours demonstrates Japanese craftsmanship. The gold seed motif, mass-produced by molding, defines the brand’s elegant identity.
- Design Challenge
- The greatest challenge in developing this product was achieving the bumpy texture and stitching applied to complement it. While embossing genuine leather is relatively easy due to it’s elasticity, plant-based synthetic leather is difficult to shape and sew because it lacks these properties. After six months of collaboration with multiple companies and testing we succeeded in creating the texture using a proprietary welder process. It is the product’s most charming yet challenging feature.
- Project Duration
- The Project was started in 2025 Aomori and was unveiled in Tokyo in January 2026 as the debut product of the Golden Seed brand. It was exhibited and sold at a one month pop up store held at BEAMS JAPAN from January 29th to February 25th of 2026. For the next phase the team plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign followed by expansion into online platforms and retail stores both in Japan and internationally.
- Operation Flow
- A clasp purse with a push lock to store and carry small items such as coins, AirTags and SD cards.
- Research
- Ringo-Tex is created by processing apple residue into power and using it as a raw material, reducing petroleum-based inputs in manufacturing by 72 - 74%. This approach lowers the dependence on finite fossil resources and decreases environmental impact. It maintains the durability and water resistance comparable to existing synthetic leather, offering a upcycled next-generation bio-based material that balances sustainability with practical performance.
- Inspiration
- This product is the first release of "Golden Seed" a brand created to embody appcycle's philosophy of "circulation". With the concept of "sowing regenerative seeds and facing a golden future" it expresses Aomori's identity it's apples in a cute, friendly, and accessible way. With refined construction intricate and meticulous stitching reflect the depth of Japanese craftsmanship.
