About RGB Hotel Homestay

RGB Hotel is a hotel building in Kangding, covering 15000 square meters. The design improves the basic functions while making the architecture more open and public, so that more people can be served. The new building is blended with the surrounding environment and the local traditional culture. Main materials include art paint, wood floor tiles, tung oil bark, steel structure and natural wood. The roof is made of local bark soaked in tung oil and is combined with modern white walls. Each guest room has an independent bubble pool supplied with flowing hot spring water.

Xiaobing Yao's RGB Hotel Homestay emerges from traditions of regional modernism that seek meaningful dialogue between contemporary architectural ambition and inherited vernacular wisdom, creating spaces where innovation honors rather than supplants local building cultures. The structure demonstrates remarkable compositional sophistication in its orchestration of three distinct material languages: the rough-hewn authenticity of dry-stacked fieldstone walls speaks to centuries of mountain construction practice, while crisp white rendered surfaces and dramatically angular rooflines announce contemporary sculptural aspirations, and the weathered Corten steel band provides chromatic mediation between these apparently opposed sensibilities. The roof forms, ascending in triangular peaks that suggest both traditional pitched forms and more abstract geometric explorations, create a memorable silhouette against the mountain landscape while their repetitive rhythm establishes visual coherence across the facade. Particularly accomplished is the lower level's treatment, where sweeping concrete curves frame doorway apertures in organic forms that soften the transition between exterior pool terrace and interior accommodation, suggesting threshold experiences of discovery and invitation. The turquoise pool functions both practically and aesthetically, its reflective surface extending the architectural composition downward while offering guests sensory refreshment and visual connection to the surrounding natural environment. The interplay of warm and cool tonalities throughout—rust steel against grey stone, white surfaces against green hillsides, aqua water beneath cerulean sky—creates chromatic richness within an overall restrained palette. One might consider how the architectural forms echo the mountain peaks beyond, creating formal resonance between built and natural environments, or how the integration of traditional materials with contemporary gestures proposes models for regionally sensitive contemporary practice.

Unique Properties
The design strategy is, while improving the basic programs and functions, to make the architecture more open and public, capable of serving more people, and blend in the new building equipped with architectural and structural innovation with the surrounding environment and its traditional culture.
Dimensions & Packaging
The project covers a total of 15000 square meters.

Production Technology
The main materials in this project are art paint, wood floor tiles, tung oil bark, steel structure, ecological large stone pieces, original wind wood.
Design Challenge
Each guest room of the hotel has an independent bubble pool, which can continuously supply flowing hot springs for residents through thermal energy conversion, so as to avoid energy waste and environmental pollution caused by large consumption of electricity and natural gas.
Project Duration
The project started in December 2020 in Kangding and finished in August 2021 in Kangding.
Operation Flow
Retaining the broken wall is not only a dissemination of beauty, but also a protection of ancient buildings.
Research
Although the second floor uses the contemporary architectural system, the material selection echoes the local traditional way. The roof is made of local bark soaked in tung oil, combined with the modern white wall to deduce the beauty of ancient and modern integration.
Inspiration
Starting from the local lifestyle and national culture, the design of RGB Hotel hopes to convey to people the brand positioning of visualization, youth and life through modern design methods. At the same time, it also perfectly fits the three elements, namely, red represents sunrise and sunset, green symbolizes ecological jungle and blue implies sky hot spring.
