About Poly Tan Gim Residential Exhibition Area

Poly Tan Gim is a residential exhibition area and community park in Liwan District, Guangzhou, on the bank of the Pearl River. The landscape covers about 12,000 square meters and combines riverside neighborhood life with Lingnan culture, the culture of Guangdong and nearby provinces in southeast China. A shared entrance and clear circulation routes connect public and private spaces. Terrain divides the open areas and water features guide visitors. Original trees are kept. Gray stone, quartz brick, champagne colored metal and custom sprayed glass form the main surfaces.

Hu Sun's Residential Exhibition Area exemplifies the sophisticated integration of architectural intervention with established natural heritage that distinguishes contemporary landscape practice at its most refined. This composition engages traditions of the contemplative garden while employing a distinctly modern material vocabulary: precision-cut limestone panels, industrially-produced glass blocks, and minimalist wooden furniture forms that together create a sequence of spatial experiences calibrated to encourage reflection and sensory awareness. The designer demonstrates particular sensitivity in the treatment of the existing mature tree, which functions as both visual anchor and environmental modifier, its canopy transforming harsh daylight into a constantly shifting pattern of illumination across the stone surfaces below. The circular bronze sculpture visible through the wall aperture operates as a sophisticated visual terminus, its reflective surface creating a dialogue between the solidity of stone and the ephemeral qualities of light and sky. Technical accomplishment is evident in the careful calibration of proportions: the horizontal emphasis of the stone wall mediates between the vertical thrust of tree trunks and the horizontal plane of lawn, while the bench placement creates a human-scaled invitation within the larger composition. Thematically, this work appears to explore the fertile territory between permanence and change, between the geometric certainty of architectural elements and the organic unpredictability of natural growth. The glass block screen suggests permeability and connection while maintaining spatial definition, perhaps referencing traditional garden design elements through contemporary means. Viewers might consider how this space creates conditions for contemplation, and what role the interplay of shadow and substance plays in establishing its particular atmospheric quality.

Production Technology
The project features gray tone stones, and uses quartz bricks as main materials, intersected with champagne metals, feeling tactile. Characteristic innovative materials, such as custom-made spray paint glass, create an exquisite landscaped wall with metal hanging technique.
Design Challenge
The project mainly "balances" the following three relationships:
1. Condition and site: how to define the space field orderly and dance with shackles under limited conditions?
2. Public and private: the crowds are complicated and the circulation routes are intertwined. How to plan the optimal circulation routes of different crowds?
3. The past and the present: in the core area of old Xiguan, how to continue to rebrand the area?
Project Duration
The project was designed in early 2019 and completed in October 2019 in Guangzhou.
Operation Flow
How to interpret the language and emotion of the site was what the design team mainly thought about.
Based on the original advantages of the site, we make three strategies:
1. Sharing and coexisting: share private gateway, sort out the complicated relationship of circulation routes;
2. Combing and integrating: divide spaces with terrain in the open area, and guide crowds with waterscape in filed area;
3. Respecting and reinterpreting: remain original trees, and reinterpret the traditional architectural language of Xiguan buildings.
Research
In such a project with unique cultural connotations and spirit of place of Liwan District, Guangzhou, the designers hoped to establish a connection between urban public spaces and private spaces through landscape, aroused memories of Xiguan in the old days, and made everyone have a sense of participation and belonging, so that the glory of the old city could not only be engraved in history, but also be continued in the new era in a way of "harmony".
Inspiration
Poly Tan Gim is located on the bank of the Pearl River in Liwan District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, close to the golden waterway of the Pearl River. It is only a few meters away from the river bank. The design team firstly considered how to interpret the language and emotion of the site.
