About Pepsi X Spotify Beverage Packaging

Pepsi x Spotify is a limited edition beverage can design created for an Egyptian audience. The artwork combines the visual identities of Pepsi and Spotify in equal measure. Bold Pepsi blue is mixed with the bright green shared by Spotify and by the rap scene in Egypt. The background uses glitch patterns and layers of cut paper with handwritten song lyrics. A QR code printed on the can allows people to listen to a Pepsi song created for a cashback campaign. An influencer kit was produced alongside the can.

This collaborative packaging design emerges from the intersection of beverage culture and digital music streaming platforms, representing a notable example of contemporary brand partnership strategy where two major consumer-facing entities unite their visual identities to create limited-edition packaging that functions simultaneously as product container, cultural artifact, and interactive portal to expanded digital experience. The cylindrical aluminum format adheres to established beverage industry standards while the surface graphics depart dramatically from conventional cola packaging through the adoption of electric lime green as a primary chromatic element, a bold departure that signals youth culture engagement and contemporary digital aesthetics over traditional brand conservatism, the checkerboard and pixelated geometric elements throughout evoke early digital graphics, retro gaming nostalgia, and glitch art movements that resonate particularly with audiences born into digital culture, while the diagonal striations and angular geometries create dynamic visual energy suggesting sound waves, audio equalization bars, or data visualization that metaphorically bridges liquid refreshment with musical streaming experience. The compositional achievement here resides in the successful navigation of multiple branding requirements, maintaining immediate recognition of the beverage identity through strategic deployment of the iconic circular emblem and established tricolor palette while simultaneously integrating the streaming platform's visual language through color choice, graphic style, and typographic treatment, the inclusion of the scannable matrix code transforms the packaging from passive container to active interface, inviting consumers to extend their physical product interaction into digital space where presumably curated musical content awaits, effectively making the beverage vessel a ticket to cultural participation beyond mere consumption. The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of contemporary consumer expectations where product packaging increasingly serves as gateway to broader experiential engagement, where physical objects prompt digital discovery, and where brand partnerships leverage complementary audience interests to create what marketing strategists term co-branded value propositions, the aesthetic choices throughout speak to specific demographic targeting, particularly younger consumers who navigate fluidly between physical and digital realms, who value cultural currency and limited-edition collectibility, and for whom beverage selection intertwines with identity expression and participation in youth culture trends. The technical execution maintains the precision and color fidelity demanded by modern package printing technologies, the matte aluminum finish provides contemporary tactile appeal while supporting vibrant color reproduction, and the overall design system creates sufficient visual distinction to command attention in crowded retail environments while maintaining coherent relationship to parent brand equities that ensure consumer recognition and purchase confidence. What questions might this packaging prompt about the evolving role of consumer product containers as cultural communication vehicles, about the increasing porosity of boundaries between physical consumption and digital experience, or about how younger generations understand brand relationships as participatory cultural platforms rather than unidirectional commercial messaging?

Unique Properties
Pepsi has always been at the forefront of the music scene, supporting what’s new and what’s next, and Spotify has undoubtedly blazed its own unique trail in music streaming. In June 2023, Pepsi joined forces with Spotify to create a Pepsi x Spotify limited-edition exclusive can design and influencer kit for an Egyptian audience. To visually represent both brands, the design had to equally integrate the identities of Spotify and Pepsi as well as an interactive QR code.
Inspiration
In creating the Pepsi x Spotify artwork, our team embraced the expressive attitude of Gen Z as inspiration. We mixed shades of bold Pepsi blue with the bright green shared by Spotify and the signature color of the rap scene in Egypt. The background includes a variety of glitchy patterns that pay homage to rapper Wegz, and layers of cut paper with “Gaya Gaya” lyrics scribbled on top. On the can, we added a QR code that people could scan to listen to a Pepsi song created for a cashback campaign.
