About Ormankoy Community Centre Nature

Ormankoy Community Centre is a public building located in Istanbul, Turkiye. A wooden shell defines the character of the community centre, while wide glazed facades open the indoor spaces to the surrounding forest. A steel frame structure creates the distinctive form and rests on concrete beams spanning over 18 metres above the pool space. Two biological ponds on different levels cover 4000 square metres, and hard chemicals were avoided to protect wildlife and pets. The wooden cladding is expected to change colour and texture over time, like the seasons of the forest.

Positioned at the intersection of contemporary architectural practice and environmental stewardship, this aerial documentation of Ormankoy Community Centre Nature captures a remarkable dialogue between built form and natural landscape that has earned recognition from the A' Design Award. The work presents the community center during winter's transformative season, when snow blankets the surrounding forest and crystallizes the essential relationship between the geometric clarity of human design and the organic complexity of the woodland setting. The architect appears to have conceived the structure as an emergent element within the forest fabric rather than an imposition upon it, with angular roof planes that echo the triangular silhouettes of surrounding conifers while maintaining unmistakably contemporary formal vocabulary. Particularly striking is the integration of a substantial reflecting pool, its unfrozen emerald surface creating a chromatic anchor that grounds the composition and suggests the building's engagement with elemental forces of water, earth, and atmosphere. The aerial perspective reveals thoughtful site planning that preserves significant forest coverage while carving a clearing that allows the architecture to breathe within its natural context. Technical accomplishment is evident in the photograph's ability to capture the subtle tonal variations within the predominantly white palette, from the luminous brilliance of sunlit snow to the cool blue-grey shadows beneath the forest canopy. The composition demonstrates sophisticated understanding of visual hierarchy, positioning the architectural complex at a compelling distance that allows appreciation of both its formal qualities and its contextual integration. This image invites viewers to contemplate how architecture might participate harmoniously within natural systems rather than dominating them, and how the seasonal transformation of landscape can reveal essential truths about the buildings we create within it.

Unique Properties
Wooden shell forms the building's characteristics. Wide glazed façades expand the indoor spaces to nature.

Within the project area there are 2 ponds in different levels. Water quality of both ponds intended to be potable water. The use of hard chemicals has been avoided to ensure the safety of the guest's pets as well as the surrounding wildlife.

Wooden claddings which is expected to change its colour and texture in time - as seen in the seasonal changes of the forest- are used both in indoor and outdoor façades.

Production Technology
Steel frame structure is what gives the unique shape of the building. From ground to 3rd basement levels, steel structure sits on concrete beams which spans over 18 meters above pool space.
Project Duration
Design phase started in December 2019 and construction completed in 2020 June in Istanbul, Turkiye
Operation Flow
Public, Non-Profit
Inspiration
Design is an abstraction of surrounding natural environment.

It's aimed to establish an intersection between Ormankoy Community Centre and the surrounded natural park with addition of biological pond which is 4000 sqm in size.

Compared to the natural park level, project building is located on the peak of the land which gives the opportunity of both to see and comprehend the natural park better and also to be seen and comprehended at the same time.
