About Obsidian Wing Lounge Chair

Obsidian Wing is a lounge chair designed for contemporary homes, art spaces and boutique offices. The chair is inspired by the form of bird wings, translating wing bone structure and tension lines into furniture. A wing shaped backrest wraps around the seated person and gives a sense of shelter and support. High performance plastic is used as the base material, shaped through 3D printing and precise computer controlled machining. The surface has a matte black finish with inlaid metal silver lines. Obsidian Wing measures 550 by 650 by 800 millimetres.

Wei Jingye's Obsidian Wing Lounge Chair occupies a distinguished position within contemporary furniture design discourse, representing a synthesis of sculptural ambition and functional consideration that extends organic modernist traditions into present-day material and manufacturing contexts. The design demonstrates notable achievement in resolving the perpetual tension between formal expression and ergonomic responsibility, the dramatically cantilevered backrest suggesting avian motion or unfurled wings while maintaining structural integrity through carefully calculated load distribution across the four-point support system. The material treatment evidences exceptional technical refinement, the flawless high-gloss black finish requiring extensive surface preparation and multiple finishing stages to achieve the mirror-like reflectivity that articulates every subtle inflection of the compound curved surfaces, transforming functional furniture into an object of visual contemplation that rewards sustained examination from multiple viewing positions. The formal language engages with mid-twentieth-century investigations into biomorphic design vocabularies while incorporating parametric surface articulation achievable through contemporary computational design methodologies, suggesting that the chair's seemingly intuitive organic forms result from rigorous geometric rationalization and structural optimization rather than purely gestural expression. The backrest configuration particularly invites consideration, its bilateral wing-like projections establishing visual drama and formal identity while potentially offering lateral support and creating psychological enclosure without the visual mass of traditional upholstered wings, a strategy that balances sculptural impact with spatial efficiency. The color selection of deep black serves multiple rhetorical functions: it emphasizes form through highlight and shadow modeling rather than chromatic distraction, it conveys sophistication and timelessness aligned with enduring design values, it permits the chair to function as visual anchor or neutral element within diverse interior contexts, and it references the modernist tradition of monochromatic presentation that foregrounds essential formal qualities. The manufacturing approach suggested by the flawless surface continuity and precision edge resolution indicates advanced production capabilities, whether through injection molding of engineered polymers, thermoforming of composite materials, or traditional substrate construction with contemporary finishing technologies, demonstrating how material innovation and fabrication precision enable formal ambitions that earlier generations of furniture makers could only approximate through labor-intensive handcraft. The chair's presentation through professional studio photography against an infinite white void follows established conventions for design documentation and commercial presentation, yet this decontextualization also functions as curatorial strategy, inviting viewers to engage the chair as sculptural artifact worthy of formal analysis independent of specific functional contexts. How might the Obsidian Wing Lounge Chair redefine domestic or commercial interiors, and what relationships between body, support, and architectural space does its distinctive formal language propose?

Production Technology
Using high performance plastic as the base material, it is formed through an integrated process of 3D printing and precision CNC machining, accurately achieving complex surfaces and load bearing structures. The surface is coated with a matte finish and embedded with metal silver wires, balancing lightweight characteristics with excellent load bearing performance.
Design Challenge
The core concept of the design is to transform the imagery of wings providing protection and extension into the form of a chair. The main challenge lies in balancing the lightness of the wing like structure with its load bearing capacity, achieving a fusion of metallic silver lines and matte black textures.
Project Duration
The design had started in Shenyang in January 2025, completed in Shenyang in June 2025, and displayed in the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang in June in 2025.
Operation Flow
Suitable for modern home living rooms, artistic studies, luxury model rooms, boutique hotel lounges, and creative office spaces. It can serve as a focal art piece for the space, combining practical functionality with visual appeal, and complements a variety of design styles such as luxury, and avant garde.
Research
Seated in the chair feels like growing obsidian wings, freezing a moment of burgeoning power into static form. Its enveloping wing like structure creates psychological shelter, turning sitting into a posture of gathering momentum. Exploring bionic integration with modern furniture, it balances aesthetics and ergonomics, presenting a design both powerful and poetic.
Inspiration
Inspired by the imagery of sitting as if sprouting black wings, the chair draws on the fluid structure of avian wing bones, mechanical distribution of wing spars, and tension lines of tendons, translating the grace and power of nature into furniture language. It offers a sense of being guarded and supported, symbolizing rest, release, and spiritual freedom from daily routine.
