About Nudibranch Hotel and Resort
Nudibranch is a hotel and resort located on Nanji Island in Zhejiang Province, China. The design covers 31000 square meters and is inspired by sea creatures found around the island, such as the nudibranch and other shellfish. The building is raised on soft legs that connect the ground to restaurants, bars, a spa and a swimming pool. The public area resembles a floating space above the sand. The sandy ground extends into the hotel and forms an outdoor playground in the shade. Eco-friendly technologies reduce the environmental impact.
Drawing upon the rich tradition of biomimetic architecture that has gained prominence in contemporary design discourse, Nudibranch Hotel and Resort by Yan Pan represents a compelling synthesis of organic morphology and advanced parametric engineering, positioning itself within a lineage of visionary hospitality architecture that seeks harmony between built form and natural systems. The design appears to take direct inspiration from the delicate, ribbed anatomical structures of nudibranchs, those vibrantly colored sea slugs whose gill-like cerata provide both respiratory function and extraordinary visual presence in marine environments. This translation of biological form into architectural language demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how natural structures achieve both structural efficiency and aesthetic resonance. The twin domed volumes establish a dialogic relationship across the coastal landscape, their horizontal ribbing creating rhythmic surface articulation that modulates light and shadow while potentially serving environmental functions such as solar shading and natural ventilation channeling. The rendering captures the structures at blue hour, when artificial illumination from within transforms the domes into lantern-like presences against the deepening sky, a luminous quality that suggests the bioluminescent properties of many marine organisms. The landscape design between structures employs organic topography that mirrors the flowing curves of the architecture itself, creating experiential continuity between building and ground plane. Small human figures populate the pathways and terraces, their diminutive scale emphasizing the ambitious monumentality of the architectural vision while suggesting spaces designed for contemplation and leisurely movement. The presence of the full moon and ascending aircraft introduces temporal and spatial dimensions, connecting this grounded resort experience to celestial rhythms and global mobility networks. Viewers might consider how such biomimetic approaches to architecture invite us to reconsider the relationship between human habitation and the natural world, asking whether buildings might function more like organisms than machines.

- Unique Properties
- The building blends the boundaries between the building and the landscape by its organic form and flexible connectivity; it sits on the site like a nudibranch crouching on the peaceful bay. Many Eco-friendly technologies have been installed to minimize the environment impact.

- Inspiration
- The design is inspired by sea creatures, which the island is famous for, such as nudibranch and other shellfish. This “mollusk” lifts itself by its soft legs and stretches its tentacles to explore different directions. The public part resembles a floating space above the sand. The sandy ground blends into the hotel to become an outdoor playground in the shadow cast by the building above. The legs connect the ground to restaurants and bars, and the SPA and swimming pool to to the public space.
