About Moon Trace Art Installation
Moon Trace is a light and shadow art installation. The form recalls the moon and integrates dragon motifs. The design links the Eastern full moon, a symbol of reunion, with the Western crescent moon, a symbol of hope. Moon Trace is made mainly of recycled steel and is divided into four modular parts for efficient assembly and disassembly. Built-in LED strips, projected light and intermittent smoke interact with polished surfaces. An automatic sensing spray system responds to the position of viewers, creating changing scenes.
Within the contemporary tradition of monumental public sculpture that seeks to forge meaningful dialogue between artistic expression and urban experience, He Xiayun's Moon Trace Art Installation emerges as a compelling meditation on celestial imagery, temporal cycles, and the poetic potential of industrial materials transformed through artistic vision. The work demonstrates remarkable technical achievement in its orchestration of numerous parallel tubular steel elements into a unified sweeping gesture that simultaneously evokes the familiar crescent of the moon and suggests more universal themes of cyclical renewal, natural rhythm, and the human impulse to mark and celebrate celestial phenomena. The compositional intelligence evident in the graduated spacing of the linear elements creates an optical vibrancy, a sense of contained movement and energy that activates the surrounding plaza space even in stillness. The chromatic strategy proves equally sophisticated, exploiting the reflective properties of polished metal to capture and transform both natural twilight and artificial illumination into a seamless gradient that appears almost to emanate from within the sculpture itself. This luminous quality connects the work to longstanding artistic traditions celebrating light as both physical phenomenon and spiritual metaphor. The installation's careful siting within an urban commercial context suggests thoughtful consideration of how public art might offer moments of contemplation and beauty within the rhythms of daily life, providing what might be understood as a secular shrine to natural wonder within the built environment. The organic quality of the curving form, despite its industrial materials and precision fabrication, invites viewers to consider the harmonious relationship between human making and natural form. One might contemplate how this contemporary interpretation of lunar imagery continues ancient traditions of moon-watching while speaking in a distinctly contemporary visual language. How does the experience of encountering such a work at twilight, when the sculpture's illumination intensifies against the darkening sky, transform our relationship to both the artwork and the urban space it inhabits?

- Production Technology
- The eco-friendly installation mainly uses recycled steel. Its modular design divides into four interconnected parts for efficient assembly/disassembly. The lighting system includes built-in LED strips and external projected light, interacting with polished surfaces and intermittent smoke effects, creating a realistic yet surreal tunnel. Viewers experience the fusion of East-West cultures and the integration of eco-friendly concepts with modern technology amidst light and shadow interplay.
- Design Challenge
- During this project's design, we faced multifaceted challenges. Extensive research required significant time consulting materials. Budget and time constraints led to intense communication and coordination. Sudden temperature drops and rain at the site caused issues, but the team worked overtime together to complete the project ahead of schedule. Fabricating irregular structures was difficult, but the team prioritized environmental protection, using recyclable materials. Through iterative tests,we achieved the desired artistic effect.
- Project Duration
- The installation was launched in Shanghai, China, in October 2024, serving as one of the highlights of the inaugural Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival, and has been permanently collected for exhibition. Additionally, the project team is actively preparing for a re-exhibition event to be held in France.
- Operation Flow
- This installation adapts to various exhibition scenarios with multiple lighting effects and an automatic sensing spray system that creates diverse landscapes based on audience position and viewing angles. The team innovatively incorporated projection technology to enhance visual presentation, meeting the display needs of different themes.
- Research
- This project showcases a cross-cultural lighting art installation, exploring lunar phase and dragon cultures of East and West, marking the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations. Research focuses on conveying cultural depths and fusing light, shadow, water mist, and more. Viewers immerse in the installation's cultural connotations and emotional resonance, experiencing a blend of East and West.
- Inspiration
- This project's inspiration stems from exploring China and France's rich cultural heritages, especially appreciating lunar phases and the dragon symbol. The moon's waxing and waning carry deep metaphorical meanings, while the dragon represents strength and wisdom in both cultures. The design team fused Eastern full moon and Western crescent moon connotations, incorporating the dragon, symbolizing China and France's enduring friendship and shared vision for a bright future.
