About Masseria Auraterrae Nature Resort
Masseria Auraterrae is a nature resort located in Polignano a Mare, Puglia, Italy. The project restores a historical building of 3000 square metres within 120000 square metres of land. The design follows the Roots concept, which values traditional practices, local materials and construction techniques passed down through generations. Locally available materials reduce transport needs and support the local economy. Rainwater harvesting, renewable energy and organic waste management are integrated. Stone epigraphs and other historic elements were preserved.
Bepi Giuseppe Povia's Masseria Auraterrae Nature Resort exemplifies the contemporary revival and reinterpretation of traditional Mediterranean masseria architecture, those historic fortified farmhouse complexes that have dotted the agricultural landscapes of southern regions for centuries, serving simultaneously as working agricultural centers and residential compounds, now transformed through sensitive adaptive design into hospitality destinations that honor vernacular heritage while meeting contemporary expectations for comfort and visual refinement. The compositional achievement of this documentation resides in its successful integration of multiple scales and temporalities within a single synoptic view: the immediate architectural intervention rendered with pristine clarity in its whitewashed geometric purity, the productive agricultural landscape suggesting both historical continuity and ongoing cultivation, the verdant vegetation providing organic counterpoint and environmental amelioration, and the spectacular atmospheric conditions crowning the entire ensemble with transient golden-hour drama that elevates documentary record into aesthetic experience. The technical merit demonstrates sophisticated control across the challenges inherent in extreme tonal range photography, preserving delicate highlight detail in brilliant cloud formations while maintaining legible shadow information in architectural recesses and tree masses, achieving this balance through either exposure bracketing and HDR compositing or graduated neutral density filtration, calibrated to deliver naturalistic tonal relationships rather than the hyperreal excess that often mars such challenging lighting conditions. The chromatic accomplishment celebrates the timeless appeal of whitewashed architecture under warm Mediterranean light, that particular luminous quality where brilliant white surfaces capture and reflect ambient color temperature, transforming pure titanium white into cream, butter, and pale gold as the sun descends, while the surrounding landscape provides complementary verdant greens and earth tones, and the spectacular sky offers a full palette from warm coral through peach and apricot to cooler lavender and slate blue. The formal language speaks to the enduring appeal of cubic volumes and orthogonal clarity within the Mediterranean tradition, where intense sunlight renders complex ornament illegible and harsh, encouraging instead the eloquence of simple geometric forms, crisp shadow lines, and the subtle modulation of plane meeting plane at right angles, a reductive aesthetic that shares affinities with modernist movements while predating them by centuries, demonstrating that vernacular building wisdom often anticipates formal architectural theory. The environmental integration suggests thoughtful site planning that preserves and celebrates the agrarian context, the vineyard rows establishing geometric order and productive purpose, the manicured lawns and decorative gravel parterres mediating between architectural formality and agricultural function, the tree masses providing scale transition, shade, and biophilic connection, the entire composition reading as a harmonious negotiation between human intervention and landscape context rather than an imposed object indifferent to its setting. The elevated vantage point employed in this documentation serves multiple functions: practical legibility of the complex's organization and its relationship to surrounding cultivation; aesthetic drama through the revelation of geometric patterns invisible at ground level; and symbolic suggestion of transcendent overview, the capacity to comprehend a place simultaneously as intimate habitable space and as component within larger ecological and cultural systems. The temporal specificity captured here, those precious minutes when descending sun transforms ordinary light into extraordinary luminosity, imbues the image with heightened awareness and emotional resonance, reminding viewers that architecture exists not as static form but as dynamic participant in diurnal and seasonal cycles, its appearance and atmosphere continuously transformed by the earth's rotation and the sun's apparent path across the celestial vault. One might observe how this work invites contemplation of contemporary hospitality design's capacity to honor regional building traditions while serving new programmatic functions, to preserve agricultural heritage while adapting historic typologies, and to create destinations that offer both retreat from urban intensity and connection to landscape, cultivation, and the slower rhythms of rural life, posing questions about how architecture might facilitate meaningful human experiences through material restraint, environmental sensitivity, and attention to the transformative qualities of natural light.

- Research
- Every part of the Histric Building is a careful recovery of what already existed, including the vegetable gardens in the ancient walls, the church, the reception areas and the refectory. The oldest historical elements found have been preserved, even where they are not very functional, but express great historical value. Some elements are no longer found today, unfortunately. In the face of the many epigraphs that we have found on the masseria and cleaned so that every traveler could read and interpret them according to their own sensitivity, many others have been lost; I think of the stone inscription that was located above the entrance to the garden of the officinal herbs that was removed over time as well as other tombstones that told the history of the place.
- Inspiration
- Architecture can empower local communities by actively involving them in the design and construction process. This approach ensures that projects reflect the needs and aspirations of the community, promoting local pride and social cohesion.
