About Junk Paradise Collectible Figures

Junk Paradise is a series of collectible figures based on animal characters and short stories. Each figure shows a character with a small imperfection that is turned into a playful strength. Popo the porcupine makes popcorn to cover his prickles so he can hug his friends. Sushi the pelican runs a whale watching cruise for river fish that fear the sea. The characters were modelled as digital sculptures, prototyped by resin printing and then cast in resin. Layered spray painting and hand painted details complete each piece.

Yawen Qiang's Junk Paradise Collectible Figures participates within the vibrant contemporary tradition of designer toys and art collectibles, a movement that emerged at the intersection of fine art practice, industrial design, and popular culture collecting, transforming everyday vessel forms into charismatic anthropomorphic characters through geometric simplification and strategic chromatic deployment, the work demonstrates sophisticated formal intelligence in its balanced composition where a standing figure constructed from smooth molded components occupies a natural textured base, creating productive tension between manufactured precision and organic irregularity, the chromatic achievement proves particularly noteworthy in the deployment of a complementary yellow-blue relationship that generates visual energy while maintaining harmonious balance, the intense cadmium yellow of the legs and lid component vibrates against the cooler navy accent and cerulean atmospheric background, while the white body section provides neutral ground allowing these saturated hues to achieve maximum impact, the small vermillion ribbon detail introduces warm punctuation that enlivens the overall chromatic structure, technically the work exhibits the clean execution characteristic of precision vinyl or polymer manufacturing, with seamless joints, consistent wall thickness, and crisp edge definition throughout, the modular construction allows the upper yellow dome section to open revealing an interior populated by three simplified white figurines that peer outward from their contained environment, this revelation mechanism transforms static sculpture into interactive discovery, inviting handling and repeated engagement, thematically the work explores resonant ideas of containment and protection, hidden worlds and secret inhabitants, the relationship between exterior presentation and interior reality, the vessel as both container and character, these themes gain additional dimension through the choice of simplified rabbit-like forms for the interior inhabitants, creatures traditionally associated with fertility, abundance, and hidden burrows, the anthropomorphization of the vessel form itself suggests how designed objects can transcend pure function to embody personality and generate emotional connection, the work stands within traditions of Japanese kawaii aesthetic sensibilities where simplified geometric forms and carefully considered color relationships generate appeal across age groups and cultural contexts, while also referencing modernist design principles of essential form and honest material expression, the low viewpoint of the presentation photograph monumentalizes the compact figure, suggesting how collectible objects occupy imaginative space disproportionate to their physical scale, becoming totems of personal identity and vehicles for storytelling within collector communities, the natural stone base grounds the manufactured figure in elemental materiality, perhaps suggesting connections between contemporary making and ancient craft traditions, between industrial production and natural process, viewers might contemplate how this work negotiates the boundaries between sculpture and toy, between fine art and commercial product, between individual expression and manufactured multiplicity, considering what transformations occur when vessel forms are reimagined as characters and when protective containers become narrative protagonists in their own right.

Production Technology
The project began with narrative development and character design, where stories and characters were explored through sketches and storyboards. The characters were then translated into digital 3D sculptures using ZBrush. Prototypes were realized through resin 3D printing, followed by curing, hand sanding, and surface refinement. Then the pieces are casted with resin. Final pieces were completed through layered spray painting to create depth and gradients, complemented by hand-painted details.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was translating the concept of imperfection into forms that remain visually appealing and emotionally engaging. By exploring subtle asymmetry, irregular details, diverse poses, and nuanced facial expressions, the project seeks to express character and narrative while maintaining aesthetic harmony, allowing users to intuitively connect with the pieces.
Project Duration
The project started in April.2019 in Los Angeles and was completed in Aug 2019 in Los Angeles. Later the project was exhibited at Lightbox Expo in Los Angeles, Designer Con in Vegas and CTN in Burbank.
Operation Flow
Junk Paradise creates a story-driven interaction that invites users to step into its world through observation, touch, and imagination. Defined by bold forms, expressive character design, and refined hand-crafted execution, each piece invites users to engage through subtle details and visual cues that suggest personality and narrative. The experience remains open-ended, allowing users to interpret, collect, and build personal connections, gradually revealing a quiet celebration of imperfection.
Research
This project is grounded in a reflection on the societal pursuit of perfection and explores how design can celebrate individuality through imperfection. By translating this concept into character driven forms, the research investigates how subtle variations, emotional cues, and story telling can foster empathy and self acceptance. The work aims to create a space where users can recognize value in difference and connect with these characters that reflect diverse ways of shining.
Inspiration
My inspiration comes from my daily observation of friends and wild animals. I like noticing the small imperfections in people and how they deal with them in their own ways. By using animals and their natural traits, I turn these observations into characters and stories about friendship, imperfection and being comfortable with who you are.
