About Interpreting Discomfort Oil Paint
Interpreting Discomfort is a series of oil paintings about personal space and social pressure. The works show hands and eyes in staged scenes that recreate everyday moments of unease. Caring actions can bring people closer, yet too much attention can also cause discomfort. The paintings combine two techniques. Indirect painting builds a black and white base that is then glazed with color. Direct painting applies mixed color straight onto the surface. The series is made with oil paint on canvas and wood panel, and it is shown in galleries as a starting point for conversation.

- Ideation and the atmosphere is the hardest part of this project. In the presentation of the picture, the shape of the hands must be placed harmoniously in the picture without losing the beauty.
- Project Duration
- The project began in San Francisco in 2020. Participated in Contemporary Venice 2021, Italy and Small Works 2021, New York.
- Operation Flow
- It will be displayed in a gallery, and these paintings can be a tool for conversation.
- Research
- The first thing is to study how to create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Eyes and hands are good parts for expressing emotions. The unnatural feeling of combining these two makes the picture more attractive and intriguing.
- Inspiration
- The images she make for this project are staged recreations of her own experience, and she believe that it is also the experience of many other people. This series deals with issues of discomfort and stress in everyday life. We all care about how others view us, this has become the same as our invisible living standards.

Design Interview about Interpreting Discomfort Oil Paint
I like to find inspiration in my life, it can be recent events or my feelings. I like to convey feelings to viewers through my works, so as to achieve the function of communication and resonate.
This work explores the invisible pressure of life and how they are formed. The work uses the unusual combination of hands and eyes, making people feel uncomfortable is exactly what I want to convey.
I will continue to explore and research this topic, maybe through different methods or media to add more depth to the work.
There are currently ten works in this series, and it took a year from the idea to these ten works.
This work has a lot to do with me personally. I am a sensitive person and easily feel pressured by other glances or actions. Sharing these thoughts is also a process for me to relieve stress.
If there is any opportunity to cooperate in any form, I would very much welcome.
This series of works is presented in a surreal way. After many discussions and designs, I feel that the surreal way of presentation can maximize the tension of the picture and attract the viewer's eyes.
YiLan Liu is a Taiwanese artist, and her works have inspired me a lot. In her work you can feel the richness and subtlety of emotion, which also influences the way I interpret my work.
Interested collectors.
In this work, I combined my own cultural background and living environment, and it is a work that is difficult to reproduce.
The name is really a difficult question, and it bothered me a lot in the early stage of creation. When I understand how my pressure is formed, I also reinterpret this pressure in the work, so the name "Interpreting Discomfort" is very intuitive to me and fits my work well.
Oil paint.
The hand and the eye are inspired by the Thousand-Handed Avalokitesvara, the story of Avalokitesvara is teaches people to love and care, but too much attention is a trouble for a shy person like me.
I develop my projects on my own.
Technology is important in this design. In order to avoid unnecessary association during viewing, the accuracy of hands and eyes is required.
In the early stage of the creation, in addition to my own ideas, I also collected the uncomfortable feelings of many people around me. In addition to the presentation of pictures, color is also a main research direction.
The technical aspect is a challenge, in order to make the work look more realistic, I practiced hundreds of hands. And then thinking about how can this idea resonate with the audience.
I want to share my work with more people, but also to tell people who feel in the same way that they are not alone.
Practice and not be afraid to make mistakes.
No, thank you.
