About Icy Fire Immersive Digital Art Installation
In this immersive installation, the color palette transitions from cool to warm tones as the video progresses, representing the tragic impacts of global warming. However, the re-freezing of the text at the conclusion of the video provides a glimmer of hope, signifying the potential influence of humanity's collective efforts. This creative fusion of traditional ink painting with the concept of environmental consciousness elevates classical ink art into the realm of contemporary art, highlighting the enduring vitality of Chinese ink in the digital era.
Lampo Leong's Icy Fire Immersive Digital Art Installation engages the rich tradition of environmental light-based artwork that traces its lineage through the pioneering investigations of perceptual phenomena and spatial transformation developed by mid-century light and space practitioners, while simultaneously deploying contemporary digital projection technologies that enable chromatic intensity and pattern complexity previously unattainable through purely architectural or natural light sources. The installation demonstrates sophisticated technical command of theatrical lighting systems, projection mapping methodologies, and architectural spatial design, creating an environment where the boundaries between physical structure and immaterial illumination dissolve into unified experiential totality. The compositional achievement lies in the work's rigorous formal restraint, limiting the chromatic palette almost exclusively to the blue spectrum while generating remarkable visual complexity through subtle variations in saturation, luminous intensity, and projected pattern, demonstrating that restriction of means can paradoxically produce amplification of effect. The central corridor functions as both literal and metaphorical threshold, inviting processional movement through space while simultaneously serving as vanishing point that anchors the perspectival system and provides rhythmic counterpoint to the surrounding blue saturation. The wave-like patterns projected across the reflective wall surfaces evoke multiple simultaneous associations: the rippling refractions of light passing through water, the undulating curtains of aurora borealis, the interference patterns of electromagnetic phenomena, and the digital aesthetics of computational rendering, creating a visual vocabulary that bridges natural observation and technological mediation. The work's titular paradox of ice and fire manifests viscerally in the viewer's embodied response, as the cool blue temperature typically associated with cold, distance, and crystalline clarity encounters intensity of saturation and luminous output more commonly aligned with heat, energy, and combustion, generating perceptual and psychological tension that resists easy resolution. This installation invites contemplation of how contemporary digital technologies enable artistic creation of environments that transcend the limitations of physical materials and natural light, while simultaneously questioning whether such technological mediation enhances or complicates our capacity for authentic phenomenological encounter with aesthetic experience. One might consider how the work positions the viewer not as passive observer but as active participant whose movement through the space and durational engagement with the chromatic field become integral components of the artwork's completion, suggesting that immersive installation practice fundamentally reconceives the relationship between artwork, space, and audience.

- Production Technology
- This work began by hand-painted ink paintings on rice-paper. Next, converted these physical artworks into digital images using a high-resolution scanner. Finally, TouchDesigner is used to create dynamic movements, blending traditional techniques with digital elements to achieve an immersive installation beyond classical painting.
- Design Challenge
- Transformation of classical and contemporary ink painting techniques into postmodern digital video art and immersive installation.
- Project Duration
- This project started in Macao in 2023 and finished in 2024. The work was exhibited in Macao Museum of Art, Guangdong Museum of Art, Shenzhen Art Museum, and Glow Shenzhen 2024.
- Operation Flow
- Digital ink generative video art and immersive installation.
- Research
- The color palette shifts from cool to warm tones, symbolizing the alarming effects of global warming, yet the re-freezing of the text at the end of the video offers a glimmer of hope, signifying the potential impact of our collective efforts.
- Inspiration
- Scientists’ statistics and predictions indicate that global warming could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity. This international environmental crisis necessitates collective action from individuals and countries worldwide. The immersive digital ink generated video art installation, through the distinctive texture of Chinese ink painting and the language of geometric and gestural abstraction, depicts the transformation of a glacier from ice to fire.
