About Horse Year Scent Sticks Packaging

Horse Year is a packaging series for incense sticks. The design centers on the seal script Chinese character for horse, combined with the linear language of Daoist talismans and smoke patterns. Five variants follow a color cycle based on the Five Elements of metal, water, wood, fire and earth. The five boxes can be placed side by side to form an image of a galloping horse. An inner tray is pulled out to reveal the incense and a blessing message. Uncoated paperboard, soy based inks and a molded pulp tray support recycling.

Zhou Hong's Scent Sticks Packaging for the Horse Year presents a compelling study in how contemporary commercial design practice synthesizes cultural symbolism with international visual language, creating packaging systems that function simultaneously within traditional celebratory contexts and global marketplace environments where chromatic confidence and structural elegance communicate premium positioning and festive occasion significance. The five-vessel ensemble demonstrates sophisticated understanding of color psychology and chromatic semiotics, deploying a vibrant saturated palette spanning warm-to-cool temperature spectrum that evokes both celebratory energy and sophisticated brand identity, the amber-orange suggesting warmth, abundance, prosperity, and harvest associations deeply embedded in Eastern festive traditions while simultaneously communicating contemporary approachability, the magenta-pink activating joy, celebration, vitality, and auspicious fortune symbolism while maintaining international luxury goods chromatic vocabulary, the lime-green projecting renewal, growth, spring emergence, and vital life-force associations that resonate across cultural boundaries, the neutral pearl-white providing visual breathing space while suggesting purity, new beginnings, and premium quality signals, the commanding matte-black establishing sophistication, modernity, and anchoring gravitas that prevents the chromatic ensemble from appearing overly sweet or ungrounded. The dominant calligraphic ribbon motif spiraling upward through each cylinder's central axis appears to reference both traditional Eastern brush-stroke aesthetics and the specific zodiacal animal year being celebrated, the fluid undulating form potentially suggesting the dynamic movement, grace, strength, and upward-striving energy traditionally associated with equine symbolism, the ascending gesture creating visual metaphor for progress, achievement, aspiration, and forward momentum that aligns with new-year celebration themes and positive-outlook cultural positioning, the continuous spiral potentially evoking concepts of cyclical time, eternal return, seasonal progression, and the interconnection of past-present-future that characterizes lunar calendar consciousness. The structural decision to employ cylindrical tube format suggests practical considerations including efficient retail stacking, compact storage, protective enclosure for delicate aromatic contents, and gift-presentation elegance, while the varied height differentiation enables both visual rhythm in ensemble display and potential product-line segmentation across fragrance types, intensity levels, or duration options, the tallest vessel commanding vertical emphasis that naturally draws eye upward creating shelf-presence hierarchy. The compositional intelligence evident in the photographed arrangement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of commercial product presentation conventions, the staggered diagonal recession creating dynamic visual interest while maintaining frontal legibility of each vessel's primary graphic identity, the varied heights preventing monotonous alignment while establishing rhythmic cadence that guides eye movement through the composition, the chromatic progression from warm amber through transitional pink to cool green establishing color-temperature journey that creates visual completeness and satisfying chromatic narrative arc. The typographic restraint employing minimal sans-serif characters positions the work within international contemporary design discourse while allowing the primary calligraphic gesture and chromatic blocking to carry the primary communication burden, suggesting target audience sophistication and design literacy, the strategic placement of text elements at structural transition zones where color bands meet demonstrates compositional discipline and graphic hierarchy clarity. The matte surface finish across all cylinders signals premium positioning and tactile sophistication, rejecting glossy commercial vernacular in favor of refined contemporary material language that appeals to design-conscious consumers seeking products that bridge functional purpose and aesthetic object status, the resulting vessels becoming retention-worthy containers that extend brand presence beyond initial product consumption into longer-term display or repurposing possibilities. How might these vessels embody the intersection of ancient celebratory traditions and contemporary global design language, transforming utilitarian aromatic product containers into cultural ambassadors that carry forward symbolic meaning systems while speaking fluently in international visual vocabularies that transcend linguistic and geographic boundaries?

Unique Properties
This packaging series transforms the seal script Chinese character for Horse and the linear language of Daoist talismans into a contemporary visual system tailored for incense products. Through a color cycle derived from the generative logic of the Five Elements and the subtle integration of flowing 2026 curves the five variants are unified into a coherent narrative regarding time and blessing. The design merges ritual sensibility emotional experience and everyday usability enabling users to intuitively select incense according to their emotional state rather than engaging with the packaging merely as a decorative container.

Production Technology
The packaging employs uncoated paperboard soy based inks and restrained hot stamping to emphasize the seal script visual while ensuring recyclability. Constructed through die cutting and folding the design utilizes a molded pulp inner tray instead of plastic. The graphic system is developed by vectorizing strokes from seal script and Daoist talismanic lines refined through rigorous prototyping and color calibration.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge lies in translating specific cultural elements like seal script the Five Elements and Daoist motifs into a contemporary global packaging language avoiding stereotypical Oriental imagery. Research balanced historical literature with youth aesthetic preferences selecting motifs that convey cultural depth without religious misinterpretation. Execution complexity arose from controlling fine lines on uncoated paper using soy based inks. Multiple proof iterations ensured both environmental sustainability and visual precision.
Project Duration
The project started in May 2025 in Beijing China and finished in November 2025.
Operation Flow
Users may first align the five individual boxes side by side to assemble a complete image of a galloping horse, and then select the incense corresponding to a particular color and Five Elements attribute according to their current mood or usage scenario. The packaging is opened by pulling out an inner tray, through which the incense and its associated blessing message are revealed simultaneously. This deliberately slowed opening action creates a brief "pre-ritual" moment before the act of lighting the incense.
After use, the outer boxes can be retained as modular desktop storage units or framed as decorative panels, allowing the packaging to continue functioning beyond a single-use context. In this way, the interaction extends beyond one-time consumption and encourages sustained engagement with the product and its cultural narrative.
Research
This qualitative design study seeks to reintegrate traditional incense and Daoist culture into the daily lives of younger audiences. The research methodology synthesized literature reviews on Five Elements symbolism with competitive market analysis. Interviews and user testing with participants aged 20 to 35 investigated specific habits and aesthetic preferences. Findings revealed that minimalist narrative driven and emotionally expressive designs are preferred for gifting purposes. These insights directly informed decisions regarding the final form color system and copywriting strategy.
Inspiration
Inspired by Chinese incense culture this project celebrates the 2026 Year of the Horse through the Five Elements. The design condenses Eastern philosophy into packaging by blending the seal script horse character with Daoist talismans and smoke patterns. Hidden curves subtly form the number 2026. The color system follows the generative cycle of Metal Water Wood Fire and Earth. This chromatic logic connects five variants inviting users to select a fragrance and an auspicious intention for the day.
