About Horizon Residential House

Horizon is a single storey timber framed house designed for comfortable long term living. The terrace eaves, the carport roof and the gable walls share the same visual depth, which creates a simple and clear silhouette. Careful structural design conceals all interior columns within the walls, so the interior remains open and spacious. Two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen and a guest room connect without corridors. Large south facing windows open onto a terrace and join indoor and outdoor space. Materials and colours were kept to a minimum.

SHUNSUKE OHE's Horizon Residential House engages the enduring architectural fascination with light's capacity to define space and evoke atmosphere, situating itself within contemporary residential design traditions that privilege geometric clarity, material restraint, and the orchestration of illumination as both functional necessity and poetic device; captured during the transitional moment between day and night when the deepening blue envelope of twilight establishes maximum chromatic contrast with warm interior lighting, the composition reveals an architectural approach rooted in modernist principles of horizontal extension, planar simplicity, and transparency as mediated connection between interior sanctuary and exterior environment; the technical accomplishment evident in the crisp white rendered surfaces speaks to careful detailing and execution, where flush transitions between wall planes and glazing systems maintain geometric purity while accommodating the pragmatic requirements of weather protection and thermal performance, demonstrating how contemporary construction techniques enable the realization of minimalist formal aspirations without compromising functional integrity; the fenestration strategy, employing generously proportioned openings softened by translucent drapery, achieves dual objectives of providing abundant natural daylight during occupied hours while creating glowing lantern effects after dark that transform the dwelling into a beacon within its landscape context, suggesting the architect's attention to the temporal dimension of architectural experience across diurnal cycles; compositional sophistication manifests in the asymmetrical yet balanced arrangement of volumetric masses and the carefully choreographed sequence of spaces revealed through the L-shaped pathway configuration, inviting gradual discovery and creating threshold moments between exterior approach and interior arrival, between public presentation and private retreat; the chromatic restraint, limiting the palette primarily to cool atmospheric blues, warm cream interior tones, and crisp architectural whites punctuated by darker material accents, demonstrates disciplined color sensibility that allows spatial relationships and geometric forms to command primary attention while the temperature contrast between cool exterior and warm interior encodes symbolic associations of shelter, comfort, and domestic sanctuary; the integration of landscape elements, visible in the carefully positioned vegetation at composition edges and the choice of aggregate ground treatments that mediate between architecture and earth, suggests responsiveness to site conditions and awareness of architecture as intervention within natural context rather than autonomous object; the lighting design emerges as particularly noteworthy, employing multiple artificial sources at varying scales and orientations to create layered illumination effects that emphasize horizontal planes through uplighting, reveal vertical surfaces through raking light, and define circulation through ground-level markers, together composing a nocturnal presence that speaks to contemporary understanding of light as architectural material with sculptural and atmospheric potential; this approach to residential design invites viewers to contemplate how architecture mediates between human scale and cosmic vastness, how light carves habitable space from darkness, and how geometrically ordered shelter provides psychological anchor within the unpredictable flows of daily life, raising questions about the relationship between formal restraint and experiential richness, between minimalist aesthetic and domestic comfort, and between architecture's capacity to both frame views outward toward landscape and nature while simultaneously creating protected interiority where human activity unfolds in warmth and security.

Design Challenge
To achieve a beauty that is both simple and striking, the palette of materials and colours was intentionally kept to a minimum, both inside and out. The plan is organised around a clear and efficient circulation, allowing daily life to unfold naturally and without stress. Designed from a long-term perspective, the house supports comfort and ease as its residents grow older, offering a timeless living environment that will remain graceful for decades to come.
Project Duration
Project Duration : From June 2018 to February 2025 / Project location : Tokyo(Japan)
Operation Flow
The plan comprises two bedrooms, a living room, dining room, and kitchen, together with a guest room, dressing room, bathroom, and toilet. The spaces connect seamlessly without relying on corridors, creating a circulation plan that is both simple and highly efficient. Furthermore, through meticulous structural design, all interior columns are concealed within the walls, allowing for a spacious and open plan interior.
Research
The large south facing sash windows connect seamlessly to the spacious outdoor terrace, creating a rich living space where the indoors and outdoors merge as one. The facade, which serves as the building’s face, has been designed with meticulous calculations of vertical and horizontal balance to achieve a form recognised as universally beautiful.
Inspiration
This is a project for a single storey timber framed house. Designed under the philosophy of a timeless design that will never look dated, even decades from now, it achieves a beauty that is both simple and striking, capturing the hearts of all who see it.
By eliminating all superfluous elements, this design exudes a timeless beauty that will continue to be cherished for generations to come.
