About Hongzhou Academy Sales Center

Hongzhou Academy is a sales center located in the central area of Nanchang County, China. The building holds spaces for negotiation, handwork, children's activities and display. Two blocks face the urban roads at an intersection, and their offset position forms the entrance square. The design refers to ancient Chinese architecture. Aluminium sheets are joined with buckles, creating a brick-like texture on the facade. A smooth curved surface outlines the roof and recalls traditional eaves. Large glass areas and a high atrium give the interior an open and comfortable character.

Hongzhou Academy Sales Center by FENG CHENG stands as a compelling exemplar of contemporary architectural practice that seeks meaningful dialogue with regional building traditions while embracing the expressive possibilities of modern materials and construction technologies. The design demonstrates a nuanced understanding of how historical architectural forms can be reinterpreted rather than merely replicated, transforming the characteristic curved rooflines associated with classical East Asian architecture into sleek sculptural gestures rendered in contemporary metallic cladding. This approach positions the work within broader contemporary discourse surrounding critical regionalism and the ongoing negotiation between global architectural language and local cultural identity. The technical achievement evident in the seamless integration of the complex curved roof geometry with the vertical facade system speaks to considerable engineering sophistication, while the careful orchestration of artificial lighting transforms the building into a luminous presence that commands attention during evening hours. The composition of building and landscape demonstrates holistic design thinking, where geometric paving patterns, embedded linear lighting, water features, and strategic planting work in concert to create a choreographed arrival sequence befitting the structure's commercial purpose as a sales center. The material palette reveals thoughtful restraint, with silver-gray metallic surfaces providing neutral sophistication that allows the warm amber accent lighting to become the primary chromatic statement. One might observe how the architect engages with threshold conditions, the upswept roof terminations functioning as welcoming gestures that lift the eye upward while the extensive glazing at ground level invites visual and physical entry. The reflecting pool introduces contemplative pause into the approach sequence, its still surface doubling the architectural presence and introducing temporal dimension through the capture of changing sky conditions. How might this architectural language of transformed tradition speak to evolving cultural relationships with heritage and modernity in contemporary building practice?

Production Technology
Metallic aluminium sheet, glass, coating Material
Design Challenge
To avoid the glue layer on facade, architects designed a gusset plate unit also use aluminium to insure the tone of the grey facade.
Project Duration
The project started in August 2020 in Nanchang and finished in December 2020 in Nanchang, China.
Operation Flow
The building provides people with a comfortable purchasing environment. The large area of glass enables people to enjoy the external scenery. The high atrium increases the width of the space. People can regard it as a commercial building or a place to rest.
Research
Chosing the material for roof was a difficulty. Designers compared the effect and cost of Titanium-zinc Panel, Al-Mg-Mn alloy building sheets and aluminium sheet and finally chosed aluminium sheet as the roof material.
Inspiration
The area has a splendid cultural history in ancient times, so the form fully refers to the ancient Chinese architecture. Aluminum plates are connected by buckles, forming a unique brick texture on the facade. The smooth arc-shaped curved surface outlines the skyline of the building, which reminds people of the eaves curve of ancient Chinese buildings.
