About Get Space
Get Space is an architectural lighting design for a commercial complex in Huangpu Science City, Guangzhou, China. The scheme uses LED luminaires and narrow-beam spotlights with dynamic controls, so each zone receives illumination suited to its function. Embedded spotlights, linear accents and vertical lighting follow the stacked box facade. A colour temperature of 4000K is used for the exteriors and 3000K for pedestrian areas. Motion sensors and dimming reduce energy use by up to 30 percent during off-peak hours. Anti-glare shields limit light spill toward nearby homes.
Xinxing Wu's Get Space exemplifies the sophisticated intersection of architectural form and illumination design that characterizes the most accomplished contemporary commercial developments, where lighting transcends mere functional necessity to become an integral compositional element that reveals and celebrates structural intention. The work demonstrates masterful understanding of how artificial light can articulate architectural volumes during the transitional hours between day and night, employing a hierarchical lighting strategy that addresses multiple scales of perception simultaneously. At the urban scale, the warm amber edge lighting transforms the building into a recognizable landmark, its luminous outlines creating a distinctive silhouette against the evening sky that serves wayfinding and place-making functions. At the intermediate scale, the vertical louver system filters interior illumination to create a subtle textile-like quality across the facade, the rhythm of light and shadow establishing a visual texture that enriches the material presence of the cladding. At the human scale, the generously lit retail arcade invites pedestrian engagement, the canopy-protected walkway offering both shelter and visual interest through carefully considered ambient lighting that renders the commercial environment welcoming without glare or harsh contrast. The chromatic restraint of the lighting palette, predominantly within the warm white spectrum, complements the bronze-toned architectural materials while providing sufficient contrast against the cool twilight atmosphere to ensure visual prominence. The layered spatial composition of stepped volumes creates opportunities for shadow play and dimensional reading that the lighting design exploits with precision, each horizontal band and projecting element receiving appropriate illumination to maintain legibility of the overall architectural gesture. This work invites contemplation of how nocturnal lighting design can extend and enhance the architectural experience beyond daylight hours, transforming built form into luminous sculpture.
