About Folds Folding Rack

Folds is a modular storage rack inspired by origami art. The design uses a small number of component types that can be arranged in different ways. The same parts can form desktop storage boxes, wall shelves and edge shelves. Folds is made of metal sheet and is supplied as a flat pack, so the parts are assembled by following the instructions. A gradient color effect is applied by spray painting, and the surface texture is added by heat transfer printing. The open compartments allow items to be placed and reached quickly.

Ziel Home Furnishing Technology Co., Ltd's Folds Folding Rack emerges from a design tradition that celebrates the transformation of industrial materials and processes into objects of domestic utility and aesthetic refinement, positioning itself within the legacy of modernist furniture design where clarity of form, honesty of material, and intelligence of construction converge to create functional solutions that honor both practical necessity and visual sensibility. The work demonstrates sophisticated engagement with sheet metal fabrication techniques, where the inherent properties of steel, its capacity to accept precise folds along calculated bend lines, its structural rigidity once formed into three-dimensional geometry, and its receptiveness to durable powder-coat finishes, become the very language through which the design articulates its formal vocabulary and functional promise. The compositional presentation employs the analytical documentation strategy familiar from design museum archives and manufacturer catalogues, where multiple views and colorway options communicate systematic design thinking and market versatility, allowing viewers to comprehend both the object's spatial characteristics and its potential for personalized aesthetic integration within diverse interior contexts. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precision of every fold line, the consistency of material thickness, the clean resolution of cutout geometries, and the careful calibration of proportions that balance storage capacity against visual lightness, ensuring the racks function as both practical containers and sculptural presences that enhance rather than dominate domestic environments. The chromatic strategy deploys warm terra cotta orange as a bold accent colorway that suggests Mediterranean earthenware traditions and contemporary design confidence, while the neutral warm gray alternative offers restrained sophistication for contexts requiring subtler visual integration, demonstrating thoughtful consideration of market segmentation and user preference diversity. The U-shaped cutouts along bottom edges function simultaneously as visual rhythm devices, weight-reduction strategies, cable management solutions, and potential hanging points, exemplifying the modernist ideal where every formal gesture serves multiple purposes and decoration emerges naturally from functional necessity rather than applied ornament. The perforated mesh panels introduce secondary material vocabulary while potentially serving ventilation or visibility functions, their regular dot matrix pattern creating textural contrast against smooth planar surfaces and suggesting the designer's attention to both practical performance and visual interest. Thematically, the work engages enduring questions about domestic order, spatial efficiency, and the aesthetic possibilities inherent in everyday functional objects, proposing that storage solutions need not retreat into invisibility but can instead claim architectural presence and contribute meaningfully to interior spatial character. The modular nature of the system, evident in the varied configurations and scales presented, suggests adaptability across diverse living situations and evolving organizational needs, embodying contemporary values of flexibility, personalization, and sustainable consumption through durable design that accommodates changing circumstances rather than requiring replacement. One might observe how the Folds Folding Rack negotiates the boundary between furniture and architecture, between object and environment, inviting consideration of how thoughtfully designed organizational systems can enhance daily living through the subtle pleasures of rational form, material integrity, and the quiet satisfaction that accompanies bringing order to domestic spaces through objects that respect both functional requirements and aesthetic sensibilities.

Press Kit

Unique Properties
Inspired by origami art, it focuses on the design concept of changing processes within the same module. Starting from the flat packaging of origami structure, the modular components are adjusted through the production process to transform into various forms such as desktop storage boxes, wall shelves, and edge shelves. Adapt to the storage needs of multiple scenarios with the fewest component types, integrating the efficient logic and practical functions of origami space.

Production Technology
The material is a metal sheet and supports flat packaging. The gradient effect is achieved through the spray painting process, and the surface texture is endowed by heat transfer printing. The durability of the metal is suitable for various scenarios, and the lively visual effect is created by the color process.
Design Challenge
Origami flexibly folds and transforms into a stable product structure, taking into account both configurability and durability. Balance the functional requirements of multiple scenarios in modular design. Through repeated material tests, structural simulations, and optimization of component connections and folding angles, a product that combines the aesthetic appeal of origami with practical storage is ultimately achieved.
Project Duration
The project started in Shenzhen in February 2024 and was completed in Shenzhen in June 2024.
Operation Flow
Users can choose to place it on the desktop or hang it on the wall as needed. Assemble the flat packaging components as per the instructions; When in use, items can be conveniently placed in the corresponding compartments, and the open structure facilitates quick access. The decorative appearance interacts with the space and becomes a visual highlight.
Research
This project explores the application of origami concepts in the design of storage products, studies the generation logic of origami forms, and develops modular components with folding adaptability. Through user scenario analysis, verify the multi-scenario applicability.
Inspiration
In origami art, a sheet of paper, after being folded, takes on various three dimensional forms. When it comes to product design, using modular components as paper, through simple process adjustments, various shapes can be transformed, generating storage items suitable for multiple scenarios.
