About Flore Chair

Flore is a furniture collection made of gradient pink glass, formed by a single seat sofa and a side table. The rounded, flowing shapes are inspired by a flower in bloom. The transparent material and the glossy finish with smooth edges give the pieces a light appearance. Each item is shaped by artisans using free hand glass blowing and moulds. The colour gradient is obtained through a layering process that creates a continuous transition of tone. A supporting structure is integrated to provide strength. The side table works as a surface and as a decorative object.

Jun Wang's Flore Chair occupies a distinctive position within contemporary design practice where sculptural ambition and functional purpose converge through innovative material exploration and refined formal sensibility. Fabricated from rose-tinted transparent acrylic, the work demonstrates sophisticated engagement with thermoplastic sheet material's unique optical and structural properties, transforming industrial substrate into an object of considerable aesthetic refinement and poetic resonance. The design participates in longstanding dialogue between studio craft traditions and industrial production methodologies, recalling organic modernism's biomorphic vocabulary while employing advanced fabrication techniques characteristic of contemporary digital design workflows. Compositional achievement manifests through the elegant resolution of two primary curved panels, a horizontal seat element and vertical backrest component, whose intersection creates both structural stability and visual dynamism through asymmetrical balance and flowing contour integration. The chromatic accomplishment lies in the designer's selection and manipulation of color within the material itself, where mauve-to-wine gradient effects emerge through thickness variation and light transmission rather than applied surface decoration, allowing the chair to function as a chromatic field that shifts subtly with changing illumination and viewing angle. Technical facility appears in the precision edge definition, flawless surface finish, and seamless construction that conceals joinery while maintaining structural integrity adequate to functional seating demands. Passages of particular visual interest occur where overlapping panels create color intensification through layered transparency, and where curved surfaces catch light to produce luminous highlights against deeper saturated edge zones. Formal choices serve expressive ends by evoking organic growth patterns and petal-like delicacy while maintaining the geometric clarity and material honesty valued in contemporary design discourse. Thematically, the work invites contemplation of materiality itself, how industrial processes can yield poetic effects, and how transparency functions both practically as lightness and metaphorically as openness or revelation. The rose-pink tonality carries multiple cultural associations, from floral beauty and feminine grace to the warmth of flesh or the glow of dawn, enriching the functional object with affective and symbolic dimensions beyond mere utility. The chair appears to explore tensions between fragility and strength, ethereal appearance and structural reality, industrial precision and organic fluidity, inviting viewers to reconsider assumed boundaries between art and design, sculpture and furniture, aesthetic contemplation and bodily use. Potential visual precedents include transparent acrylic furniture experiments from the mid-twentieth century through contemporary practice, organic modernism's celebration of flowing curves exemplified in works by designers exploring biomorphic abstraction, and the material investigations of studio glass artists who similarly exploit transparency and color as primary expressive means. How does the simultaneous presence of utilitarian function and autonomous sculptural beauty alter our relationship to everyday objects, and what new forms of domestic poetry emerge when chairs aspire to the condition of light itself?

Production Technology
Each Flore piece is crafted using advanced glass-blowing techniques by skilled artisans. The glass is carefully heated to a malleable state and then shaped using both free-hand blowing and mold techniques to achieve its fluid, organic form. The gradient effect is achieved through a precise layering process, ensuring a seamless transition of color. The supporting structure is subtly integrated, providing strength without compromising the purity and lightness of the design. Every piece is a testament to the mastery of glass craftsmanship, blending modern artistry with traditional techniques.
Design Challenge
The development of Flore overcame several challenges, including creating a seamless gradient color effect in glass, balancing aesthetic lightness with structural stability, and ensuring transparency while maintaining durability. The team innovated with traditional Venetian glass-blowing techniques, developing new methods to reinforce the glass without compromising its delicate appearance. Collaboration with master artisans and advanced technology helped merge craftsmanship with modern design, achieving a stunning yet functional piece.
Project Duration
The Flore project began in January 2023 in Venice, Italy, and was completed in June 2024.
Operation Flow
Flore blends art and functionality seamlessly, offering versatility for different spaces. The single-seat sofa provides a perfect retreat, whether placed by a window for natural light reflections or in a cozy corner for a meditative break. The side table works as both a practical surface and a statement piece, enhancing the ambiance of any room with its soft glow. When placed together, the pieces create a harmonious composition, like a flower in full bloom, bringing tranquility and a touch of nature to any environment.
Research
The creation of Flore involved extensive research into glass manipulation, balancing both the fragility and strength required for the design. The biggest challenge was achieving the perfect gradient effect while ensuring durability. The design team worked closely with master artisans, experimenting with various techniques and prototypes to perfect the color transition and structure. The result is a collection that redefines glass as both a material and a medium of organic expression, offering a fresh perspective on modern furniture design.
Inspiration
Flore is a dreamlike celebration of light and petals, capturing the delicate and graceful beauty of a flower in full bloom. Inspired by the soft glow of morning light on translucent petals, the glass material gives it a crystalline, ethereal quality, while the gradient pink tones mimic the natural unfolding of petals. The rounded, smooth forms evoke organic beauty, with each piece radiating a tranquil, poetic atmosphere that transforms any space into a serene haven.
