About Flora Armchair

Flora is an armchair designed for free and informal rest. The continuous curved form removes the boundaries between seat, backrest and arms, inspired by the opening of a flower bud. The asymmetrical shell allows sitting, leaning or lying in several positions, without mechanisms or adjustments. The base is made of solid tauari wood and the shell of pressed curved multilaminate wood, finished by hand and upholstered with sustainable materials. A loose roll cushion adds support in different uses. Flora measures 108 by 110 by 90 centimetres.

Victor Leite's Flora Armchair emerges from contemporary furniture design traditions that celebrate the expressive potential of natural materials and organic form language, positioning itself within lineages extending from mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship through to present-day artisanal furniture practice. The work demonstrates remarkable compositional intelligence in its orchestration of contrasting material characters: the sumptuous, yielding volumes of leather upholstery appear to rest within and upon a wooden framework whose flowing curves suggest botanical growth patterns, perhaps evoking the vegetal inspiration implicit in its naming. Technical accomplishment manifests in multiple registers, from the precise tailoring of leather panels around compound curves to the sculptural carving of wooden elements that maintain structural integrity while achieving visual lightness through their tapered, organic profiles. The chromatic relationship between warm cognac leather and richly grained wood establishes a harmonious earth-toned palette that suggests both warmth and sophistication, while the inclusion of a contrasting dark side table introduces visual punctuation that prevents the composition from settling into comfortable monotony. One might observe how the design mediates between apparently opposing qualities: the substantial and the graceful, the enveloping and the structured, the artisanal and the refined. The Flora Armchair appears to invite not merely seating but dwelling, its generous proportions and organic contours suggesting extended contemplation rather than momentary rest. Viewers may find themselves drawn to consider how the boundaries between furniture as functional object and furniture as sculptural presence dissolve in designs that approach both concerns with equal seriousness and sensitivity.

Production Technology
Flora blends technological precision and artisanal skill. Its solid tauari wood base is sustainably sourced and finely crafted. The curved shell is molded from pressed multilaminates, finished by hand, and upholstered with eco-conscious materials. The roll cushion is crafted with care and offers flexible use. Entirely produced in Brazil, the process honors local furniture tradition with environmental awareness.
Design Challenge
The challenge was to break traditional ergonomics without losing comfort. Flora invites lying down, not just sitting, requiring a study of informal postures and new support criteria. Production was also a challenge, translating free curves into viable molds. Integrating sustainable materials without compromising aesthetics reinforced the project's vision as a new perspective on rest.
Project Duration
The project began in 2020 and was first published in 2021 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Operation Flow
Flora encourages intuitive, sensory interaction, breaking with the frontal use of traditional armchairs. Its curved, asymmetrical shape invites sitting, lying, or leaning freely. The adjustable cushion enhances comfort in various uses. With no mechanisms or adjustments, the piece welcomes spontaneously, promoting a natural flow between body, presence, and rest.
Research
The research aimed to rethink sitting from the perspective of the sensitive, not mechanical, body. Informal postures and daily gestures of rest were observed, leading to an asymmetrical, embracing form. Inspired by a blooming flower, Flora combines user testing, renewable materials, and intuitive design to propose a freer, more emotional, and everyday-connected experience of rest.
Inspiration
Flora was born from the desire to rethink the act of sitting, proposing a free and unstructured rest. Inspired by the shape of a blooming flower bud, its curved shell gently embraces the body. Without rigid divisions, it allows multiple uses, guided by the user's sensibility. More than function, it is a poetic proposal on being in space with affection, freedom, and truth.
