About Fairy Tale Travel Textbook
Fairy Tale Travel is a series of textbooks designed for elementary school students in Korea. The books use a fairy tale concept to give consistency to the whole series and to make learning enjoyable. Character guides appear in each textbook and lead students through the lessons. Warm colours, hand drawn illustrations, soft typography and curved shapes create a friendly look. Each grade and semester has a different main colour, so materials are easy to find. The covers use holographic printing, and antimicrobial film coating and ink are applied for safer use.
The Fairy Tale Travel Textbook series by Mirae-N Design Team exemplifies contemporary excellence in educational material design, demonstrating how thoughtful visual communication can transform pedagogical content into objects of genuine aesthetic pleasure and imaginative engagement. These covers participate in rich traditions of illustrated children's literature while advancing distinctly contemporary approaches to character design, color theory, and typographic integration that speak to current visual sensibilities. Each volume establishes its subject identity through carefully calibrated chromatic choices: warm yellows suggesting mathematical warmth and logical sunshine, cool greens evoking scientific inquiry and natural observation, and balanced earth tones indicating social studies and community understanding. The illustration approach demonstrates sophisticated restraint, populating each environment with just enough narrative detail to spark curiosity without overwhelming young viewers, while the anthropomorphized characters invite identification and emotional connection across species boundaries. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless gradients, precise character rendering, and dimensional typography that maintains playfulness without sacrificing legibility. In addition, holographic gourd was used on the cover to visually express the imaginary space of fairy tale travel, and antiviral rotation printing technology was applied to make it safer for children to use textbooks using antimicrobial film coatings and antimicrobial ink. - Design Challenge
- Unlike existing textbooks, the initial planning was important to conduct consistent storytelling. The feasibility was ambiguous at the time of the initial planning due to an attempt of design style that was not tried in existing textbooks, but we were able to set the desired direction through a lot of communication with the editor so that the contents of the textbook could be expressed well like a fairy tale.
- Project Duration
- The elementary textbook design project will begin in March 2023 and end in March 2024, complete the review and start selling in 2025.
- Operation Flow
- The design was created with a focus on connection, softness, and fluidity, ensuring both visual comfort and enjoyment during learning. Each textbook incorporates imaginative worlds to stimulate visual interest, while the cloud-inspired title typography conveys a soft and dreamy atmosphere. Through a design that sparks imagination, students are guided beyond reality into the world of elementary school textbooks. This approach helps them perceive textbooks as an adventure, fostering greater engagement and enthusiasm for learning.

- The design concept of elementary school textbooks is based on fairy tale books, and it captures children's curiosity and imagination by making ordinary daily life feel like a place for adventure and exploration.
Cute and friendly characters appear in each elementary school textbook to guide children into the world of fairy tales so that they can be interested in learning.
Because of this, the textbook will be a space where children create their own stories beyond just learning tools. - Inspiration
- Most of the existing textbooks are organized without a consistent story throughout the textbook.
It is a project that started with the idea of 'If there is a textbook such as a fairy tale book, wouldn't it be easier and more enjoyable for children to learn?'
Also, I wanted to make a textbook that learners want to have, just like choosing and purchasing a fairy tale book with a pretty drawing style at a bookstore.
