About Diagonal Table
Diagonal is a desk designed around a single geometric idea, the diagonal line that joins two opposite corners. The tabletop is made of plywood with walnut veneer, and the veneer pattern follows the same diagonal guide. The two stands are made of steel with a powder coated finish, and both stands are placed along the same line. The main structural skeleton is hidden inside the tabletop and carries the load through three short columns to the stands. A bevelled edge and a gap between top and stands make the surface appear to float.
Chris Chen's Diagonal Table exemplifies the continuing vitality of modernist furniture design principles while introducing distinctive formal innovations that distinguish it within contemporary practice. The work engages with enduring questions of material dialogue, structural expression, and visual equilibrium that have animated furniture design since the early twentieth century, yet resolves these concerns through a personal vocabulary of form and finish. The designer demonstrates considerable sensitivity to the expressive potential of contrasting materials, employing the organic warmth and figural richness of walnut veneer against the cool geometric precision of white-lacquered steel to create a dynamic visual conversation between natural and industrial registers. The chevron patterning of the tabletop reveals sophisticated attention to veneer selection and arrangement, transforming a functional surface into a field of visual movement and symmetrical order. Structurally, the base system achieves remarkable visual economy, the combination of solid panels and open rectangular frames creating a support mechanism that appears simultaneously substantial and permeable, grounded and transparent. This interplay between mass and void, opacity and aperture, suggests careful consideration of how furniture occupies and defines space, allowing views through the base structure while providing ample visual and physical stability. The cantilevered relationship between top and base creates an impression of suspension and lightness that belies the actual engineering, demonstrating how considered proportions and material selections can transform perception of weight and gravity. The work invites contemplation of how functional objects might embody both utility and aesthetic philosophy, serving practical needs while rewarding sustained visual attention through refinement of detail, proportion, and material relationship.

- Unique Properties
- Diagonal logic was extended to every element and compositional logic of the desk, not only reveals on the layout of walnut veneer of the tabletop, but also applies to structural skeleton that transmits force from the top to stand. Furthermore, the positions of two stands are also aligned to the diagonal guide line of the desktop.

Tabletop of plywood with walnut veneer - Design Challenge
- The main structural skeleton was embedded within the tabletop and transmits the force thru three mediated columns to the stand. The skeleton was placed at the center line of the desk and holds up two cross diagonal logic. Then connects to two 90 degree table stands.

- Operation Flow
- Void and Solid interaction:
If you stand at the perfect diagonal angle from different side of table, you will be given a total different impression of the desk. One is light as modern steel frame glass building, but from the other angle, the desk will be more like solid concrete building. And of course the view and impression will become various when you walk along the table. The balance between dynamic and static, void and solid are swinging between the diagonal lines. - Research
- The bevel detail of tabletop and the technique to distant stand and tabletop are both meant to lighten upper part of the desk and create a floating illusion.
- Inspiration
- The concept of table “Diagonal 45” is initiated from the geometric term which is one line segment joins two nonconsecutive vertices. The connection between each vertex not only creates a tension but also draw a frame to form an area. The idea is to use the simplest geometry to establish a steady and sleek structure of a table.
