About Daydreamer Rug

Daydreamer is a hand-woven floor rug. Four traditional hand weaving techniques are combined in Daydreamer: the Anatolian knot, Cicim weaving, twill weaving and shuttle traditional towel weaving. The Cicim and twill combination forms the Karacakilavuz weaving technique, which carries a geographical indication. Sun, moon and star motifs float within geometric shapes. Three woven pieces are made on traditional oak looms and joined asymmetrically with a knitted wool chain. A cotton lining covers the back, and the fringes are attached by hand. Production takes about two months.

Begum Karadag's Daydreamer Rug exemplifies the contemporary resurgence of fiber arts and textile design that honors centuries-old weaving traditions while embracing distinctly modern aesthetic vocabularies rooted in organic abstraction and spontaneous gestural mark-making, positioning this work within a lineage that extends from mid-century Scandinavian textile innovation through the studio craft movement's elevation of functional objects to art status and into current design practices that celebrate handwork, materiality, and the expressive potential of pattern, the compositional achievement here residing in the sophisticated asymmetrical balance that distributes irregular biomorphic forms across a generous cream ground, creating dynamic visual interest without overcrowding the field, the chromatic decision to work within a deliberately limited palette of warm earth tones, burnt orange and golden yellow set against neutral cream and punctuated by charcoal linear elements, demonstrates restraint and confidence, allowing each hue to register with full intensity while maintaining overall harmony, the technical facility evident in the clean execution of complex interlocking woven forms, the irregular organic edges that require careful attention to warp and weft manipulation, and the textural richness achieved through visible weaving structure that rewards close examination, the fringe treatment in deep navy providing both visual weight that anchors the composition and tactile contrast that emphasizes the work's material presence as dimensional object rather than purely pictorial surface, thematically this work invites contemplation of the intersection between functionality and aesthetic expression, the ways domestic objects can carry artistic ambition and enrich daily life, the title Daydreamer suggesting reverie, imagination, and the mental space opened by engagement with beautiful crafted things, the organic forms potentially referencing natural phenomena such as water-worn stones, scattered leaves, biological cells viewed microscopically, or simply exploring the inherent visual pleasure of irregular curved shapes distributed across a field, the meandering charcoal line functioning almost as signature or trace of the maker's hand, a gestural element that personalizes the geometric rigor of weaving technique, the inclusion of human hands in the photograph emphasizing scale, inviting tactile imagination, and situating the rug within lived domestic space rather than gallery isolation, acknowledging its dual identity as both artistic statement and functional floor covering meant to be walked upon, touched, inhabited, the work participating in broader conversations about the value of handcraft in an industrialized world, the role of pattern and decoration in contemporary design, and the ways traditional techniques can be vehicles for personal expression and formal innovation, viewers might consider how this rug transforms a room, what emotional or sensory experiences it offers beyond visual appreciation, how the interplay of warm colors and organic forms creates psychological resonance, and what stories or memories such an object might accumulate through years of domestic presence, the piece ultimately proposing that beauty and utility need not exist in opposition but can be integrated seamlessly, that floors need not be neutral backdrops but can be fields for artistic exploration, and that the ancient human practice of weaving colored threads into patterns remains vital, meaningful, and capable of generating fresh aesthetic experiences.

Production Technology
The production was made by combining four different techniques. These are: Anatolian Knot Technique, Cicim Weaving Technique, Twill Weaving Technique and Shuttle Traditional Towel Weaving Technique. The looms on which the weaving is applied are traditional looms made of oak with four pedals and four texsolv heddles.
Three weaving pieces are produced separately and hand-embroidered using the crochet stitches. Back side cleaning process is done with a crochet hook and scissors. Three wings are joined together asymmetrically with a knitted wool chain. A lining fabric containing cotton is added to prevent the back of the fabric from being exposed. Finally, each rug fringe at the end of the rug is hand-attached to finish the product.
Design Challenge
This design is not just a rug; it is a tapestry of emotions, reminding us of the balance between light and shadow, joy and solitude. “Hayalperest” symbolizes a world where dreams intersect with reality, where each color and shape guides us toward positive reflections and tranquil memories. Embrace this piece as an emblem of the beauty in daily transitions, a reminder to find solace and inspiration in the simplicity of everyday life.
Project Duration
Karacakilavuz Weaving Technique, which is the core technique of weaving the product, belongs to the Tekirdag province of Turkey. It is only allowed to be produced only in Tekirdag. For this reason, the production of the rug was made in Buruz's own workshop in Tekirdag province of Turkey. Buruz's workshop is the first production workshop opened in Turkey, providing sustainable women employment for Karacakilavuz Weaving. The production period takes approximately two month (the stage of dyeing the ropes with plants is not taken into account).
Operation Flow
The product is designed as a floor rug. It is produced in Buruz's workshop in approximately two months, using completely sustainable materials. The sale and promotion of the product is made on Buruz's website or other sales points. Since it is a custom-made product, it can only be produced as a limited edition. Due to its production feature, it is not a mass production product. Production can be made upon order.
Research
Eda Zamanpur made her own digital design drawing on the photo of a rug designed by Begum Karadag on a previously produced design. The entire design was redrawn digitally. Then, all patterns were coded and processed on checkered papers. Then, we evaluated which technique would express itself brightly for a few weeks. The line starting from one piece of weaving had to continue uninterruptedly on the other piece of weaving. Therefore, making the three separate pieces of weaving look like a whole required the most precise work.
Inspiration
Hayalperest” is a journey into the reverie of home, a space where day and night coexist, each representing cherished memories and the warmth of shared moments. Inspired by the concept of daydreams, “Hayalperest” invites one to envision a landscape that merges the earthly with the celestial. Sun, moon, and star motifs float harmoniously within geometric shapes, creating a visual story that evokes both modernity and nostalgia. This design is not just a rug; it is a tapestry of emotions.
