About Dahua Park City Exhibition

Dahua Park City is an exhibition building set between mountains and a lake in Kunming, China. The main volume is stilted above the sloped site, while multi-layer terraces and long French windows open wide views toward the surrounding landscape. The curved facade is formed from 3,276 triangular aluminum panels, each carrying a different perforation pattern. The panels were joined in pairs to simplify installation. The interior route creates a spatial sequence that frames the lake view. The gross floor area is 2,200 square meters.

Shanghai Puspace Architectural Design Co's Dahua Park City Exhibition emerges as a compelling exemplar of contemporary parametric architecture, its bold sculptural vocabulary synthesizing technological precision with organic gestural expression in ways that suggest the continued evolution of digitally-informed design methodologies. The building's distinctive sail-like profile participates in a lineage of iconic architectural forms that seek to transcend conventional rectilinear constraints, instead embracing sweeping curves and dynamic asymmetries that activate urban space with landmark presence. The perforated metal cladding system demonstrates remarkable technical accomplishment, its thousands of circular apertures calibrated to create gradient densities that modulate light, view, and thermal performance while producing a unified aesthetic of shimmering, almost textile-like surface quality. This scrim-like treatment renders the substantial architectural mass paradoxically light and permeable, inviting contemplation of the relationship between solid and void, opacity and transparency that has long preoccupied architectural discourse. The dramatic horizontal aperture carved through the upper facade functions as both compositional device and experiential threshold, framing views while flooding interior spaces with natural light and connecting occupants visually to the surrounding landscape and sky. Unique Properties: The project is located between mountains and a lake, which is the particular of this project. The main building body is stilted, making it appear like a fish. The multi-layer terraces and the long French windows maximize the view to the surrounding landscape, and help blend the architecture into the environment.
The visual experience of the building is closely related to the sight lines. How to "hide" and "expose" is the key that runs through the whole project.

Production Technology: To complete the curved facade more effectively, we selected triangular flat panels in different sizes and stitched them together to form an integrated curved surface. As each aluminum plate has to be connected with another five ones, the biggest challenge was how to splice the neighboring plates perfectly. The construction team combined two triangular plates into a unit to minimize the difficulties and speed up the construction.
Design Challenge: There are also huge difficulties in the design and construction of curved curtain walls. We had to deal with the processing and installation of 2,276 similar but different panels, each of which has different perforation patterns. These holes present looming flow lines on the facade. In addition, lighting was another critical problem.

Operation Flow: The construction involved close collaboration among multiple parties. A digital architectural model was created for clearer division of construction work, and a 1:1 local sample wall was constructed to study how to stitch aluminum panels together perfectly. The construction team combined every two triangular panels into a unit, and finally realized a perfect collage of 3,276 panels for the curved surfaces.
Research: Not only should the entire design meet the current needs for use, but also it needed to present the image of the whole area.
The site has very complicated conditions. It's surrounded by shanty towns that have not been demolished and the existing buildings on the western cliff. It has an elevation difference of 10 meters, and the only road leading to the site is small and cramped. However, once the site is elevated, it can provide a panoramic view of both the lake and mountains nearby.
Inspiration: The design of the project was inspired by the intriguing and beautiful scenery around the site. The project is a part of the urban design of Baisha Lake Area, so it needs to take consideration into the timeline of the current and future urban construction of the area. It has to meet current functional demands while also representing the image of the whole area.
