About Chong Daybed Daybed
When stepping into traditional Vietnamese homes or strolling through peaceful village roads, one can easily spot the bamboo chong, a simple yet essential part of daily life. Inspired by this familiar image, Chong Daybed was created as a bridge between past and present, offering a modern, refined version while preserving the spirit of the traditional bamboo chong. Chong Daybed is directly inspired by this image, but it has been upgraded to suit modern needs, while still preserving the familiar simplicity and essence of rural culture.
Within the evolving landscape of contemporary furniture design, where practitioners continually negotiate between industrial production and craft tradition, between minimalist reduction and experiential richness, Chong Daybed by Sema Design Studio emerges as a thoughtful meditation on structural transparency, material honesty, and the poetics of repose. The work situates itself within a distinguished lineage of platform seating that spans mid-century Scandinavian rationalism, Japanese mingei craft philosophy, and the cord furniture traditions of designers such as Børge Mogensen, Hans Wegner, and Poul Kjærholm, who explored tensile woven surfaces as primary support systems. The compositional achievement of the design resides in its successful integration of seemingly contradictory formal qualities: the frame's slender rectilinear geometry establishes architectural rigor and structural legibility, while the woven surface introduces organic texture, visual softness, and tactile warmth, the combination yielding an object that reads simultaneously as precise and inviting, industrial and handmade, transparent and substantial. The chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated material sensibility, the warm honey tones of the hardwood frame establishing a grounding presence while the cooler, more neutral palette of the woven surface in ecru, taupe, and charcoal creates gentle chromatic vibration without disrupting the overall tonal unity, this subtle color relationship allowing material character and structural form to command primary attention. Technical facility manifests in the precision joinery of the wooden frame, where posts and rails meet in clean intersections that suggest mortise-and-tenon or dowel construction, the slender profiles requiring exact tolerances to maintain structural integrity, and in the remarkably uniform tension and spacing of the woven elements, which create a consistent planar surface across an extended span, a technical challenge requiring either skilled handwork or carefully calibrated mechanical assistance. The introduction of the cylindrical bolster element at one end of the platform establishes functional hierarchy while providing compositional punctuation, its smooth wrapped surface and contrasting formal vocabulary—curvilinear versus rectilinear, opaque versus transparent, monolithic versus gridded—creating visual interest and suggesting use scenarios without didactic literalism. Thematically, the work appears to explore fundamental questions about the nature of support, the relationship between skeleton and skin, the visibility of making processes, and the domestic rituals of rest and repose, the open woven surface and exposed frame suggesting transparency not only as visual quality but as ethical stance, a design philosophy that reveals rather than conceals its constructive logic. One might observe resonances with traditional rope beds, with the charpoy of South Asia, with the woven platforms of various cultures where tensile fiber surfaces have long provided flexible, breathable, portable sleeping and sitting solutions, the contemporary interpretation updating these vernacular precedents through refined proportions, precision engineering, and material selection that speaks to current aesthetic values while honoring enduring functional wisdom. The spatial experience the design proposes seems to emphasize horizontal extension, the elongated platform suggesting not the upright containment of conventional seating but the sprawl and release of true reclining, the raised platform elevating the resting body while the open structure beneath maintains visual and spatial flow, the object defining territory without erecting barriers, claiming space without blocking circulation. As viewers contemplate this achievement in material intelligence and formal refinement, they might consider how objects designed for the most vulnerable human state—the state of rest, of letting down, of horizontal surrender—carry particular responsibility to communicate safety through structural clarity, comfort through material selection, and welcome through formal generosity, qualities this work appears to embody with quiet confidence and understated grace.

The surface is made from microfiber leather, hand-woven by artisans, offering both elegance and durability. The disassemblable structure allows for easy movement and optimizes maintenance, making it easy to replace parts when necessary.
- Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge in designing the Chong Daybed was preserving the traditional essence of the bamboo chong while applying modern design principles. Sema Desgin Studio tested seven different versions, facing issues such as instability, lack of sturdiness, and even frame breakage. Through continuous refinement, the structure was optimized to achieve high durability and stability. Disassemblable components and a modular assembly system were introduced to ensure flexibility and ease of maintenance while maintaining the traditional spirit of the bamboo chong in a modern design.
- Project Duration
- The product was launched in the end of 2023 after about 3 years of research and producing, and was exhibited in Heritage Journey in VIET KIA Showroom in September 2024.
- Operation Flow
- Chong Daybed is a versatile product designed for various uses such as resting, relaxing, and creating a gathering space for family and friends. This design not only provides comfort and convenience but also serves as an aesthetic highlight for both modern and traditional living spaces. Additionally, the daybed is designed with a horizontal bar at one end for hanging towels, books, or other convenient items, enhancing its usability in contemporary living spaces.
- Research
- The research process began with studying the traditional bamboo chong in Vietnamese folk life, followed by experiments with sustainable materials such as oak wood and microfiber leather. Designers thoroughly researched the structure and function of the bamboo chong, while incorporating modern design principles to create a product that meets the flexible needs of contemporary living spaces.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the traditional bamboo hammock - a familiar sight in Vietnamese rural villages, Chong Daybed is not just a versatile piece of furniture but also a symbol of folk culture and family warmth. With its elegant design, close-to-nature appeal, and high functionality, Chong represents a connection from the past to the present, becoming a modern furniture piece while retaining the essence of Vietnamese life.
