About Chengdu NBD Centre Architecture

Chengdu NBD Centre is a mixed use office and cultural complex in Chengdu, China. The project includes twin office towers of 120 metres, a podium and an underground level, with a total area of 171,650 square metres. The below ground retail level connects directly to adjacent metro lines and neighbouring plots. A large sunken civic plaza draws visitors to the ground level, where multi-level links lead to retail and cultural spaces within the podium. A breathing facade supports natural ventilation, and media LED panels are integrated into the facade surface.

QUAD studio's Chengdu NBD Centre Architecture stands as a compelling exemplar of contemporary parametric design practice, demonstrating the sophisticated integration of computational form-finding methodologies with the functional demands of large-scale mixed-use development. The architectural concept appears to engage with longstanding traditions of organic modernism, evoking the biomorphic vocabularies explored by visionary architects throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries while achieving a formal language distinctly suited to its moment. The composition orchestrates three tower volumes through a choreography of connection and separation, their shared podium establishing visual and functional unity while their individual profiles assert distinct identities within the ensemble, a strategy that balances the monumental scale required of major commercial developments with the human desire for variety and visual interest. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless translation of complex curvilinear geometry into the modular logic of curtain wall construction, each tower's undulating surface requiring thousands of individually calibrated panels that together achieve the appearance of fluid, continuous form. The chromatic strategy introduces theatrical drama through the strategic deployment of colored illumination within the central void, transforming what might otherwise function as mere circulation space into a spectacular public gathering area that announces the building's presence to the surrounding urban fabric. The relationship between the architectural object and its context merits particular attention, as the sculptural distinctiveness of the curvilinear towers enters into productive dialogue with the rectilinear conventions of the background urban fabric, suggesting that innovation and context can coexist in mutually enriching tension. The waterfront setting amplifies the composition's visual impact, the reflective surface creating a natural doubling that extends the architectural gesture while the twilight atmosphere imbues the scene with contemplative tranquility. One might consider how architecture of this ambition and scale shapes collective experience of the contemporary metropolis, creating landmarks that orient urban navigation while offering spaces of gathering and encounter.

Unique Properties
Located close to Jiaozi Park, Guixi Ecological Park and the Jinjiang River, the Chengdu NBD Centre it is one of the first of many iconic projects in the Jiaozi Park business district and an important fulcrum of a world park like business district in Chengdu. As an extension of the park into the development, our goal was to create a new Cultural Icon for Chengdu and a place of destination with a green low carbon public realm for the city.

Production Technology
Together with world class environmental consultant Atelier 10, we devised a breathing façade to maximize natural ventilation for most of the year as well as exploring way to achieve PRC 3 Star Green Building. With grey water collection and multi-level green roof system.
Apart from being a fully breathing façade, we explored ways of creating developable surfaces to minimise curve glazing and an elegant way to integrate media LED into the façade.
Project Duration
Location: Chengdu, Sichuan Province China
Operation Flow
The NBD centre is divided into 3 distinctive sections, Below Ground, Podium and Main Towers all interconnected by pockets of public realm. The below ground retail connects the underground connections and metro lines into the development. A large sunken civic plaza draws visitors to the ground level where multi-level linkages take visitors to retail and cultural attraction within the podium levels. The main towers are designed house various types of digital media and cultural offices, digital art gallery and exhibition centres.
Inspiration
Chengdu like other first tier cities in China is congested with vehicular traffic. During the inception of this competition, the site was still a virgin land with metro line 6 and 9 under planning stage. Here is an opportunity respond to this congestion by looking into way of reducing above ground traffic. It was imperative at the design stage to seamlessly connect to the adjacent stations resulting to a fully integrated Transport Orientated Development (TOD).
