About Brilliance Public Artwork
Brilliance is a public sculpture installed in a courtyard pool at One Pengrui in Guangzhou, China. The work consists of eight copper fish that appear to swim in shallow water. Traditional Lingnan copper casting is combined with modern hot coloring, giving golden edges and a jasper-like surface. The fish are arranged to form flowing visual lines that guide viewers through the space. Lighting at the base mixes cool light strips with warm points to reveal the forms. Anti-corrosion treatment protects the copper. The sculpture measures 2600 mm in width, 766 mm in depth and 358 mm in height.
Chen Xin's Brilliance Public Artwork participates in a distinguished lineage of contemplative landscape interventions that harmonize sculptural presence with aquatic settings, evoking traditions ranging from classical garden design to contemporary environmental art practices that privilege sensory immersion and meditative encounter. The installation demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to material dialogue, positioning luminous biomorphic forms within a dark reflective pool that simultaneously grounds and elevates the sculptural elements through the interplay of solid mass and liquid mirror. The celadon-to-chartreuse coloration of the primary forms suggests conscious engagement with East Asian ceramic traditions, particularly the prized glazes of historical stoneware that achieved similar translucent depth through layered firing techniques, here translated into contemporary sculptural vocabulary with evident technical refinement. The organic morphology of the sculptural masses invites multiple associative readings, their undulating profiles suggesting mountain ranges viewed from aerial perspectives, resting cetaceans, or geological formations shaped by elemental forces, this deliberate ambiguity inviting prolonged contemplation and personal interpretation rather than prescriptive meaning. The vertical stainless steel columns introduce productive formal tension between the curvilinear organic and the rectilinear manufactured, their highly polished surfaces functioning as optical instruments that fragment and redistribute the surrounding environment in kaleidoscopic fashion. Submerged luminaires create a secondary compositional layer beneath the water's surface, their warm golden emanations counterpointing the cool sculptural tones in a chromatic conversation that shifts with viewing angle and atmospheric conditions. The integration of sculpture within carefully cultivated landscape, visible in the manicured hedgerows and mature specimen plantings forming a verdant backdrop, suggests site-specific commissioning that considered the total environmental context rather than the object in isolation. Viewers might consider how the work transforms with changing light conditions, seasonal variations, and the subtle movements of wind across the water's surface, each moment offering a unique configuration of reflection, illumination, and atmospheric mood.

- Unique Properties
- “Brilliance” combines Lingnan culture and intangible cultural heritage copper art. The eight copper fish in the center of the work are swimming in the pool, shining golden light, and the fish bodies exude a distinguished temperament like jade, implying the prosperity and rich of ONE PENGRUI.During the creative process, we specially invited Chen Huanzhi, a representative artist of Lingnan Copper Culture, and Chen Xin, a Xinrui automobile designer to participate to form cross-border cooperation. This cooperation demonstrating the project characteristics of “leisure and harmony”, and conveying Guangzhou's leisurely and calm attitude towards life.

- Production Technology
- To enhance the sculpture's three-dimensionality, we implemented a meticulous lighting scheme at its base. This professional design ensures clean, uniform light that highlights the sculpture’s dynamic form. A mix of cool-colored strips and warm point lights creates a tranquil atmosphere, enhancing visual impact and offering an immersive experience for viewers. Additionally, to preserve the artwork's integrity, we applied advanced anti-corrosion treatments and established maintenance guidelines, ensuring the copper retains its luster. “Brilliance” embodies our commitment to cultural inheritance and audience experience.
- Design Challenge
- In the design phase, we faced the challenge of blending traditional Lingnan copper art with modern design concepts to honor tradition while appealing to contemporary tastes. To solve this, we collaborated with Lingnan copper artist Chen Huanzhi and automotive designer Chen Xin. During production, handling and welding copper presented difficulties. We treated the inner skeleton for corrosion resistance and forged pure copper plates to minimize weld marks, ensuring durability and artistic integrity. Through continuous optimization, we balanced artistry with functionality.

- The work would be installed and placed at ONE PENGRUI, Guangzhou, China in 2024 and would be exhibited in public continuously.
- Operation Flow
- In “Brilliance,” we focus on enhancing the leisurely atmosphere in the guest courtyard by exploring the interaction between the artwork and the space. To address challenges like the oppressive feel from mirror columns and blocked light, we arranged the fish carvings to create visual lines that evoke a sense of “endless light.” These dynamic lines bring vitality and guide viewers through the courtyard, alleviating spatial limitations and encouraging relaxation. This design reflecting Guangzhou's cultural richness while elevating the artistic ambiance of the space.
- Research
- Inspired by the sparkling and golden natural beauty of the Pearl River in Guangzhou, “Brilliance” cleverly integrates the rich traditional cultural essence of Lingnan with modern design concepts. Through the innovative combination of exquisite copper casting skills and modern hot coloring technology, eight copper fish have been vividly shaped. They swim leisurely in the water, the golden light shines and the jasper texture complement each other, symbolizing the prosperity and perfect vision of ONE PENGRUI Project.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the blue waves and golden light of the Pearl River, this artwork integrates Lingnan copper art techniques with the artist's “Yeshan Fish” carvings for conceptual and process innovation. The golden edges enhance the smooth lines of the fish, while their transparent jasper color conveys honor and elegance, reflecting Lingnan culture’s connection to nature and harmony.
