About Briiv Air Purification
Briiv is an air purifier designed for home and office spaces. Briiv uses renewable and natural materials in place of the standard filters found in most purifiers. The filter media are made of moss, coconut husk and a silk-carbon matrix, and all filter media are compostable. The base and filter housing are made from a bio-plastic polymer based on elephant grass. The unit stands 220 mm high, measures 160 mm wide and weighs 900 g. Speed and duration can be set through a smartphone application or a touchless interface on the front.
Briiv Air Purification by Ryan Ward emerges from the contemporary intersection of sustainable design practice and biophilic wellness philosophy, representing a thoughtful reimagining of domestic air purification technology through the lens of natural systems and organic materials, the work positions itself within a growing tradition of design that seeks to reconcile technological necessity with environmental consciousness, drawing upon the visual language of terrariums, botanical specimens, and laboratory apparatus while serving an essential function of atmospheric improvement, the technical achievement lies in the successful integration of natural filtration media within an elegant formal vocabulary, the transparent glass chamber serves both functional and communicative purposes by making visible the organic processes typically hidden within conventional appliances, this transparency operates as a design philosophy as much as a material choice, inviting users to understand and appreciate the natural materials performing the work of purification, the layered arrangement of coconut fiber and preserved moss creates a visual narrative of filtration stages while simultaneously presenting an aesthetically pleasing composition that rewards contemplation, the matte black base grounds the organic elements with contemporary sophistication, its substantial presence providing visual weight that anchors the lighter transparent chamber above, material choices throughout demonstrate commitment to sustainability and biodegradability, transforming the typically disposable components of air purification into elements that participate in natural cycles, the work invites consideration of how functional objects might serve as daily reminders of our connection to natural systems, how might the visible presence of botanical elements within our domestic environments influence our relationship with the living world beyond our walls

- Unique Properties
- briiv is a new take on the air purifier. Using renewable and natural materials to filter the air in your home or office environment, briiv creates clean, safe, breathable air via an innovative filter system. briiv’s filters of moss, coconut husk and a silk-carbon matrix perform as effectively as an air purifier of the same low-power class. The filter media are compostable and briiv connects to smart home applications for control and to monitor usage for replacement filters.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- briiv stands at 220mm high and 160mm wide with a total weight of just 900g.

- Production Technology
- Vibers elephant-grass based bio-plastic polymer is used for the base and filter housing. Moss, coconut and a silk-carbon matrix were utilised for the filter media for their biodegradable traits.
- Design Challenge
- The most difficult obstalce was to stratify the filter media in such a way that a. was as effective as HEPA at the same power level utiliesed by competitors and b. to maintain airflow through the unit in order to provide a clean air delivery rate, the CADR, comparable to HEPA competitors.
- Project Duration
- The project began in late 2018, developed into 2019 and launched on Kickstarter in April 2019. briiv continues to crowdfund on Indiegogo and is already receiving wholesale orders from across the globe.
- Operation Flow
- briiv can be operated either via the smartphone app or via a touchless interface on the front of the unit. Speed and duration can be set on both app and interface. The touchless interface was implemented as a direct response to reducing the risk of cross-contamination realised throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Research
- Our primary goal was to reduce waste from HEPA filters which are found in the majority of air purifiers. By replacing HEPA filters with biodegradable filter media, briiv saves on landfill and the usage of finite resources such as crude oil. Effectiveness of our filter media versus HEPA was determined using air quality monitors for in-and-outflow of air mixed with common particulate matter at various dimensional scale from PM2.5 to PM10 as primary indicators or change in air quality.
- Inspiration
- Air purification is rife by plastics, glass and other unsustainable materials. We felt there is a better way to do things and set out to incorporate bioplastics and as much renewable material as possible into briiv to deliver clean air that's better for the planet, our increasingly scarce resources and for energy usage.
