About Bonsai - Podere Le Ripi Wine

Bonsai is a wine bottle packaging design created for a limited number of bottles of an IGT Toscana Rosso wine produced by Podere Le Ripi in Montalcino, Italy. The wine comes from vines grown in confined spaces, which leads the plants to root deeply and find nourishment far below the surface. To reflect this rare origin, no printed paper label is used. An image of a vine is screen printed directly on the glass in platinum, gold and matt black. The decoration measures 13 by 4 centimetres and is applied to a bordolese bottle.

Unique Properties
The project emerged from the need to produce a limited number of bottles for Bonsai, a IGT Toscana Rosso wine, produced by Podere Le Ripi in Montalcino in Italy. Bonsai is the result of a unique cultivation of the vine in which the vines grow in confined spaces which allows the plant to take root and find nourishment deep in the earth.

Project Duration
The project started in 2011 and had a first appearance made on a paper label. Screen printing on glass has been done in 2019.
Inspiration
The creative idea came from the symbolic representation of the uniqueness of the Bonsai vine and its precious nature. This is why we decided against a simple printed label and decided to produce a platinum, gold and matt black image of a vine screen-printed on glass for a collectable wine.

Design Interview about Bonsai - Podere Le Ripi Wine

The idea comes from the "darkness" of the glass bottle. An abstract space on which I thought to represent a single Bonsai vine but made with metals: silver and gold.

Give an idea of value, a sign that immediately recalls the Bonsai vine: precious and solemn. In particular, to represent the contrast of the plant (the vine - a typical western plant), and the name Bonsai which sounds oriental.

I hope it can be an example of good design and be inspirational.

About a month.

The design was commissioned by Podere Le Ripi and before reaching the shape seen on the bottle I spoke directly with the owner of the Podere, Francesco Illy, who had clear ideas.

The design is the exclusive property of Podere Le Ripi.

The sense of richness and prestige characteristic of this wine.

The project was born from direct observation of plants, based on images of the vines. I thought of a subtle and refined line for the description of the plant.

The target is represented by Food enthusiasts, Wine Lovers and Collectors.

The execution in screen printing directly on glass is a characterization point that distinguishes Bonsai from other wines with labels.

Bonsai is the name that Podere Le Ripi has given to the particular way of growing vines. The cultivation method forces the plant to minimal spaces and deep root development to reach the richest nutrients. This is why the plant is smaller. Hence the fancy name Bonsai: a miniature plant.

The design was made with overlapping vector paths.

An oriental-inspired name flanked by a western plant.

For the realization it was necessary the competence of a printer who could realize the serigraphy reproductions on glass. In particular, for a design so delicate and rich in details.

Technology was fundamental in the execution of the design. In fact, it guaranteed the precision of the design and the perfect overlap of the details and in particular of the metal parts.

The design was not influenced by any research data and was a free interpretation to tell Bonsai.

The most important challenge was concentrated in the printing phase. Once the sample was printed, we waited for the passage in the high temperature furnaces to fix the metals to the glass. It is only in that phase that we understood if we had achieved the result.

It seemed to me that Bonsai had the characteristics to participate in an international competition where the competition is always of a high standard. The challenge was the motivation.

Any idea if poorly realized loses its strength. Also in this case, which sees a simple design, the quality of the realization is essential.
