About Bio One Office Chair

Bio One is a low office armchair designed for small creative working spaces such as studios and home offices. The chair has a swivel base with castors and is made of molded thermoplastics with tapered and bent steel tubing. Organic outlines of the seat rise into an asymmetric edge on the backrest, recalling the flower of the Calla aethiopica. The asymmetry adds a sense of movement without affecting function or ergonomics. The calm and familiar form is intended to bring confidence and encourage new ideas.

Vladimir Zagorac's Bio One Office Chair emerges from the rich tradition of twentieth-century organic modernism, where designers sought to reconcile industrial production with the flowing forms found in nature. The work demonstrates a masterful synthesis of sculptural presence and functional purpose, with its continuous shell form suggesting influences ranging from Eero Saarinen's celebrated tulip series to more recent explorations in biomimetic design philosophy. The seat shell exhibits remarkable formal economy, achieving visual complexity through a single unbroken surface that curves to embrace the seated body while presenting an elegantly streamlined exterior profile. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of the organic upper element with the precisely engineered chrome base, where four gracefully splayed legs create a stable yet visually light foundation. The oversized spherical casters introduce an element of playful sophistication, their generous proportions suggesting effortless mobility while contributing to the chair's distinctive silhouette. Chromatic decisions demonstrate refined restraint, with the pure white shell establishing associations of cleanliness, clarity, and forward-thinking design philosophy, while the polished chrome introduces material warmth through its reflective surfaces. The work participates in ongoing conversations about the humanization of workplace environments, suggesting that functional objects need not sacrifice aesthetic ambition for practical utility. One might observe how the embracing quality of the shell form evokes notions of comfort and security, inviting contemplation about the relationship between the designed object and human wellbeing. What does it mean for furniture to welcome rather than merely accommodate the body?

Unique Properties
Associations and familiarity were used to shape an essential part of the workplace into an object designed to encourage creativity and instigate inspiration. General organic outlines of the seat transform and grow into a characteristic uplifting form resembling the flower of the Calla aethiopica on the edge of the backrest. This edge bends slightly backward and rises asymmetrically bringing dynamics to the silhouette but not compromising the functionality and ergonomics.

Design Challenge
The aim was to create a safe and familiar object, using the shape of the seat that relates to a multitude of natural forms and general characteristics of the living world. Asymmetry was chosen as one of the main attributes to create a feeling of dynamics, which is essential for a modern working environment, to inspire new ideas, and to boost the user's creativity. Gradual changes in the details of the form and minimal deformations that accentuate the silhouette intend to associate with growth as a universally understandable natural pattern and bring confidence.
Project Duration
The project lasted one semester at the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade.
Operation Flow
Bio One low studio armchair with swivel base and castors fulfills essential functions of an office chair intended for small productive spaces. Simplistic asymmetry and inspiring natural form complement the modern interiors of studios and home offices.
Research
The research was performed by analyzing samples from flora and fauna and simplification and stylizing through various stages of drawing and 3D computer modeling. It was driven by the challenge of creating both a calming and dynamic form for a functional ergonomic object, suitable for first-time remote work while using fresh aesthetics. The result is a universally understandable bio-form cleansed of unnecessary visual details, with harmonious organic outlines additionally emphasized in contrast with different material finishes chosen for the seat and legs.
Inspiration
Bio One was created as a part of conceptual research on the subject of stylistics within a doctoral studies project. The basic studio chair was inspired by organic forms and universal principles of nature, with the intention of bringing a fresh take to working in small creative environments.
