About Beach Cabin on the Baltic Sea Hospitality

This small diner on a Baltic Sea beach near Gdansk with its simple form fits naturally into the beach environment. The building offers two areas: an opaque part with windows and a fully glazed winter garden. The transparent glass house not only offers an unrestricted view of the sea and the beach but also uses solar energy in a passive way to improve indoor comfort in a relatively cool climate in northern Poland. The Solarlux system construction of the winter garden with its slim wood-aluminum profiles enables a filigree effect.

The Beach Cabin on the Baltic Sea by Peter Kuczia, recipient of the Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, exemplifies a contemporary approach to hospitality architecture that harmonizes bold geometric form with sensitive landscape integration. This striking A-frame structure emerges from coastal terrain as both a celebration of archetypal shelter typology and a sophisticated meditation on transparency, threshold, and the relationship between interior sanctuary and exterior environment. The design demonstrates masterful command of structural expression, employing a dark steel framework that articulates the building's dramatic triangular profile while supporting expansive glass surfaces that dissolve conventional boundaries between built space and natural setting. The architect's decision to elevate the structure on slender supports achieves multiple design objectives simultaneously: preserving the natural sand dune ecology beneath, creating a sense of lightness that belies the structure's substantial presence, and establishing a processional approach via the wooden boardwalk that transforms arrival into a contemplative journey. The material palette reveals careful consideration of contextual appropriateness, with the dark structural members receding against twilight skies while warm interior surfaces glow invitingly through the transparent envelope. This interplay between cool exterior atmosphere and warm interior refuge speaks to fundamental human experiences of shelter, welcome, and the transition from public to private realms. The symmetrical composition and pure geometric form reference both vernacular building traditions of coastal regions and the mid-century modern fascination with the A-frame as an icon of leisure architecture, yet the execution demonstrates thoroughly contemporary sensibilities in its refinement of detail and integration of hospitality programming. The surrounding landscape of mature pines and coastal grasses has been preserved and incorporated as essential visual framing, suggesting an architectural philosophy that positions the built environment as a complement to rather than imposition upon natural systems. Viewers might contemplate how the structure's apparent simplicity belies the sophisticated calibration of proportion, material, and light that creates such compelling presence within its setting.

Unique Properties
This small gastronomy facility on the Baltic beach near Gdansk with its simple form fits naturally into the beach environment. The building offers two spaces: closed and completely glazed in the form of a winter garden, which lets sunlight into the interior and completely opens the view of the sea and the beach. The strong contrast effect of the two components comes into its own both during the day and at night, when the interior of the winter garden is welcomingly illuminated.
The building stands on stilts so as not to touch the terrain directly. It literally floats above the sand
Dimensions & Packaging
The building is about 6 m wide and 18 m long.
1/3 is transparent, 2/3 are opaque.

Production Technology
The structure of the winter garden is made in the SOLARLUX winter garden system in the wood-aluminum construction. Applied thermo-insulating glass has also properties of sun protection.
Project Duration
2022 Beach on the Baltic Sea near Gdansk
Operation Flow
In colder periods, the winter garden acts as a large air collector. The heat generated inside by solar radiation is used for heating thanks to the heat pump.
Inspiration
The building is located in the north of Poland, in a climate zone where temperatures are moderate for most of the year. The winter garden contributes to passive solar energy harvesting through its glazing and to improving the energy balance of the building. In this way, the building not only opens beautiful views of the scenic landscape, but also has ecological advantages.
