About Artificial Topography Installation
Big Furniture Like a Cave
This is the award-winning project won the Grand Prize of Art in Container International Competition. My idea is to hollow out the volume inside a container in order to build amorphous space like a cave. It is made of only plastic material. About 1000 sheets of the soft plastic material of 10-mm thickness were cut down in contour line form and were laminated like stratum.
This is not only art but also big furniture. Because all the portions are soft like a sofa, and person who enter into this space can relax by finding the place suitable for the form of its own body.
Ryumei Fujiki and Yukiko Sato's Artificial Topography Installation emerges from contemporary investigations into the phenomenology of inhabited space, presenting a sculptural environment that dissolves conventional architectural boundaries between floor, wall, and ceiling into continuous flowing surfaces that envelope and embrace human presence, the work participates in ongoing dialogues between organic form and constructed environment that trace lineages through twentieth-century explorations of biomorphic architecture while engaging distinctly twenty-first-century parametric design methodologies and material innovations, the technical achievement lies in the seamless integration of structural integrity with apparent softness, creating surfaces that appear yielding and womb-like while supporting human weight and interaction, the monochromatic palette of warm whites achieves remarkable tonal subtlety through surface undulations that catch and release light differently across their topographic variations, a single dramatic void of deep indigo punctuates this luminous environment creating a visual anchor that draws the eye while simultaneously functioning as metaphorical portal or threshold, the positioning of two contemplative figures within this constructed landscape transforms abstract sculptural form into activated social space, their diagonal visual connection across the central aperture suggesting communication or shared meditation without direct physical proximity, thematically the installation invites consideration of humanity's perpetual negotiation between natural and artificial environments, the organic vocabulary of caves, shells, and geological formations translated into synthetic materials that nonetheless evoke primordial shelter and prenatal security, what does it mean to inhabit a landscape that is simultaneously utterly artificial yet deeply resonant with organic memory, and how might such environments transform our understanding of architectural possibility?

- Research
- I am a great interest in nature especially the system of nature. Two years ago, my exhibition held in England. In the exhibition, a lot of experimental architectural projects and the execution works in each category that I obtained the inspiration from nature such as “Solar”, “Air”, ”Water”, ”Ground”, “Crystal”, “Biological”, “Flower”, and “Aurora” were exhibited. Because these aimed to approach “Nature” more closely, it was named “Nature-oriented Architecture”.
And therefore, this “Artificial Topography” is the recent project of the Nature-oriented Architecture as “Ground” category. - Inspiration
