About Art and Us Book Design
Art and Us is a book that presents selected works from the collection of an art foundation. The main part shows only images of the works, while a separate small booklet, held in a pocket at the back, describes each work by page number. Every page carries original hand drawn textures, so the book recalls an artist sketchbook. The soft cover is made of transparent PVC with silk-screen printing, and kettle stitching leaves the binding visible. Three papers are used, including translucent sheets and rough sheets for exhibition documentation.
Vilius Dringelis's Art and Us Book Design emerges from the rich tradition of experimental art publishing where the book object itself becomes a vehicle for aesthetic investigation rather than merely a container for content. This remarkable work demonstrates how contemporary editorial design can synthesize modernist typographic principles with organic visual vocabularies, creating covers that function simultaneously as graphic statements and invitations to intellectual engagement. The bold diagonal arrangement of crimson letterforms against the silver-gray ground reveals sophisticated understanding of visual hierarchy and compositional dynamics, where typography assumes pictorial presence while maintaining communicative clarity. The underlying pattern work, suggesting magnified natural phenomena or digital processing artifacts, introduces conceptual layers that resonate with the publication's apparent engagement with questions of art and human experience. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precise registration of overprinted elements, the considered relationship between matte and reflective surfaces, and the strategic deployment of chromatic accent against tonal restraint. The presentation upon metallic material extends the design language beyond the book's physical boundaries, suggesting curatorial consciousness about how objects exist within environments and how context shapes perception. One might observe how the work participates in ongoing conversations about materiality in the digital age, about the persistence and evolution of print culture, and about how designed objects can embody the very themes they contain. The viewer is invited to consider how surface becomes substance, how visual complexity can communicate conceptual depth, and how the encounter with a thoughtfully designed publication might itself constitute an aesthetic experience worthy of the art it documents.

- Production Technology
- In order to convey the impression of the artist sketchbook, a binding technology was used for the book - kettle stitching. The main cover of the book is made of soft, transparent PVC sheet with single color silk-screen printing and designed pocket in the back for a smaller catalog. The first sheet of paper uses hot foil stamping, which is translucent throught PVC and gives a two-layer impression.
All main pages were printed with UV technology on a Galerie Art volume of 115 g. and Holmen Book Extra 80 g. paper. For the transparent pages was used Curious Collection Translucents Bright White 100 g., Gmund Colors Transparent Red 100 g. Information catalog paper - Rainbow Intensive Red 120 g. - Design Challenge
- The most difficult part was creating background illustrations for each page, which would be an abstract reminder of the artist sketchbook and would have its own style. The illustrations
were hand drawn, then photographed, scanned, and computer-processed. The book selects three types of papers in order to better reveal the art works, archival documentation of exhibitions, and transparent markers. - Project Duration
- The project started in September 2019 and finished in January 2020 in Vilnius, Lithuania.
- Operation Flow
- Almost every page of the book was created with original illustrations, used rough, yellowish paper for exhibition documentation and transparent markers with numbers are inserted between the pages to make the object as seamless as possible and to resemble the artist sketchbook.
- Research
- During the process, we wanted to create a seamless and the same time abstract object - book, representing the activieties of the Lewben Art Foundation for five years. Therefore, we had to find a common concept that would clearly and simply represent the book theme Art & Us. The principle of illustrations was chosen for this.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration for the book Art & Us is the artist sketchbook, in which there are a lot of hand technical drawings, therefore, to enhance this effect, these stylistic textures were specially created for each page of the book. With this principle of the book, we reveal what lies behind the artist’s final work - research and the author’s hard work.
