About A Dream Tabletop Lighting Installation
The designer considers a dream is weightless and transparent. It can hardly be caught, and yet it is so realistic. He designs this installation as a way to visualize the metaphor of the surrealistic nature in a dream. Each curved member contributes to a part of a propagating dream. He places entire design setting on a transparent base with a light source projects upward to make it feel weightless like floating in the air.

- Unique Properties
- A dream is weightless and transparent. It can hardly be caught, and yet it is so realistic. The entire setting is placed on a transparent base with a light source projects upward to make it feel weightless like floating in the air. The installation is also a metaphor of the surrealistic nature of a dream. Each curved linear form contributes to a part of a propagating dream.

- Production Technology
- The design needs a free-form linear member to mimic the blurred boundary of a metaphor. The member needs to be functioned like a canvas for a dreamer to paint upon. The color should be white. After a series of brainstorming searches, a hanger seems a perfect choice.
The installation is hand-chained. Several tests were conducted to the possible connectors, such as steel cables, abs RP filaments, and general ropes. Cable was a good choice at the first place because it held each hanger in position. But it is not transparent. Eventually a transparent 3 mm plastic string was used and surprisingly it held each member in position under tension. - Design Challenge
- A pair of linear form is interlocked with two holes on each component for connection. There should be four cables and eight connections when the head and end of the installation meets each other. A new method is developed to layout all four cables on the same path and to chain all the components in one single cable as a closed loop. The development of a close loop has a significant meaning, since a dream seems does not have a specific starting point or ending point.
- Project Duration
- This project took about one month and was made in Taipei, Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- This light installation is designed to put on a table with the top part slightly lower than eye level. By following the profile, a person can traverse the entire setting inside and outside, up and down, or from any orientation. The relative location between the box and the installation is changeable.
- Research
- This is the third design of a series sincerely devotions. Each design contributes a profound study of orders, for elements and light sources. The first two were conducted in a linear form to contrast the body curvature and the end section. The composition of different shapes was also applied. The last one selected a loop to represent an order of form.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration came from the metaphor of a dream.

Design Interview about A Dream Tabletop Lighting Installation
an endless loop of events, like a dream possible can be
simplicity and complexity, a co-existence of contrast
sell it and promote it, of course, also keep evolving
Actually it came from a design that didn't nominated las year. I just want to play with it.
It's rather an inspiration pursuit, in which is a simple mechanism of elements can be very interesting.
My design was not used by another company. Either selling or leasing the production rights is OK.
It's rather interesting. I have teaching architectural design for freshman for years. To deliver my concept and to inspire students, I would like to have this design as a demonstration of lighting installations.
interior designers, architects, or anyone who wants to decorate a space of interest
Industrial product was used as an appropriate form for representation.
An endless loop just likes a dream it never ends. This is where the name come from.
Very traditional one like hand-made. But to incorporate the metaphor of dream, a comprehensive research effort was made to find an appropriate form of industrial product for representation.
a mathematic concept into a metaphor of on-and-on dreaming
I did all by myself and enjoy that.
If these is any involvement of technology, it would be the mathematic concept applied to conduct the entire piece into an almost continuous loop.
"Möbius band" was influential and lead the configuration from parallel axis to an endless band.
To conduct a paradigm shift with the development of concept and details would be most challenging.
It's a great opportunity to open up your eyes and to have a strong connection to professionals.
I guess a simple modification is not feasible, a paradigm shift will do.
