About 1001 Nights Nuts Packaging
1001 Nights is a cylindrical packaging design for nuts. The artwork is inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights and combines hand drawn and digital illustration. The container is made from recycled paper with a food safe inner lining. The body is printed by offset with matte lamination, and selected areas are finished with gold foil or silver foil. The brand logo is embossed on the lid. The telescopic lid opens and closes easily and forms a secure seal. The lid also serves as a bowl for nuts and as a container for shells.
Mahsa mohammadzadeh's 1001 Nights Nuts Packaging represents a compelling contemporary engagement with ornamental design heritage, translating the rich visual vocabularies of historical decorative arts traditions into functional commercial packaging that elevates quotidian consumption into an aesthetic experience deserving sustained contemplation. The design demonstrates sophisticated chromatic orchestration through its deployment of saturated vermillion red and deep teal blue as primary ground colors, each activated by carefully distributed accent motifs in cream, golden ochre, coral, azure, and sage green that create visual texture and chromatic vibrancy across the cylindrical substrate. The compositional strategy employs horizontal register division that recalls manuscript page organization and textile design conventions, with an upper band of dense all-over floral and geometric patterning yielding to a lower zone featuring figurative illustration incorporating stylized characters, architectural elements including a fringed pavilion canopy, and prominent avian imagery with elongated plumage, all rendered in a style evocative of miniature painting traditions. The technical execution achieves precise registration and intricate detail resolution suggesting high-quality printing processes applied to matte substrate that receives ink with clarity while avoiding reflective glare that might compromise pattern legibility. The presentation of two colorway variations demonstrates systematic design thinking, exploring how ground color reversal transforms aesthetic character while maintaining ornamental consistency and compositional integrity. The work seems to draw upon visual precedents ranging from block-printed textiles to illuminated manuscripts to decorative ceramic traditions, synthesizing these historical references into a contemporary idiom that communicates artisanal quality, cultural storytelling depth, and artistic refinement. The design arguably elevates commercial packaging beyond mere product containment into the realm of collectible decorative object, suggesting retention value that extends product lifecycle and cultivates brand loyalty through aesthetic appreciation. The integration of narrative figuration within ornamental field invites interpretive curiosity, proposing questions about the scenes depicted, the cultural traditions referenced, and the stories these visual elements might collectively tell. How might the experience of encountering such richly ornamented packaging transform the ritual of product selection and consumption, creating moments of aesthetic pause within commercial transaction?

- Unique Properties
- This nut packaging design is inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, combining hand-drawn and digital illustrations to create a precise and artistic result. The graphic design on the can reflects traditional craftsmanship and is carried out with care and attention to detail. One of the main challenges in production was using recycled cardboard, ensuring both hygiene standards and environmental sustainability. The cylinder was designed and crafted first, followed by the careful application of the label. To enhance the visual appeal, a thoughtful blend of light and dark colors was used, and the logo was engraved on the can lid. Sections of the design are delicately gold-foiled and silver-foiled. Additionally, the lid serves a dual purpose, acting as both a shell collector and a serving bowl, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.

- Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge was finding a company capable of producing cylindrical packaging that met environmental standards. Efforts were made to ensure the use of suitable materials. Additionally, due to the lack of facilities for direct printing on cylindrical cans, the design was first printed using offset printing and then applied to the cans. This process added complexity and refinement, requiring meticulous attention to production details and design precision, which was successfully achieved.
- Project Duration
- The research phase for selecting the box began in October 2023, with two months dedicated to reading the stories of One Thousand and One Nights. Following the research, illustrations were created, inspired by the tales. The project started in January 2024, was completed in July 2024, and became available for purchase in stores in September 2025.
- Operation Flow
- The packaging features a telescopic lid that opens and closes effortlessly, ensuring a secure seal once closed. The lid serves both as a bowl for serving nuts and a container for collecting shells and waste. Made from recycled paper with a food-safe inner lining, the design guarantees product freshness. The ergonomic and practical design enhances the user experience, while offset printing with matte lamination and gold foiling elevates the product's visual appeal and value.
- Research
- The role of graphic design in packaging is essential. Illustration, as an engaging tool, conveys rich cultural stories. By incorporating the tales of One Thousand and One Nights into the packaging, we not only preserve Iranian culture but also establish an emotional connection between the product and the consumer.
