Interview with Giovanni Murgia

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
For me, design means expressing a feeling with shapes and colors to share with the rest of the world. Giving shape to ideas has always been my professional aspiration, then seeing people who relate to my designs, fills me with joy.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The Redfish agency has been involved in communication and graphic design for over 15 years, developing communication and design projects for several Italian companies. Our mission is to create great projects that will become great successes for our customers.
What is "design" for you?
Design is giving shape to ideas, creating a relationship between object and person through design.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Surely, the initial creative phase is the most stimulating one. At this stage, you accumulate experience, curiosity, analysis and attempts that are then finalized in the final project.
When do you feel the most creative?
Creativity cannot be controlled and does not have a time or place. It can express itself in different places and at different times. For example, I let my mind go when I run. During running, the mind is free and ideas run fre
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Surely, the most important aspect I take care of in my projects is that of coherence between the idea and the goal. It is important for me to make sense of the ideas, and to finalize them to be as close as possible to the goal set in advance.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
The greatest feeling is the one that originates from seeing your idea created, used and experienced by the people for whom it was intended.
What makes a design successful?
Design is the bridge that joins an object to people. In my opinion, the success of a good design stems from the strength that this bridge has in creating and maintaining a relationship with the people who then use that object.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I would say that the visual aspect is the first thing that strikes me, the balance of shapes, colors, typography, form and ergonomics. Secondly, I evaluate the effectiveness of these elements in relation to the function and needs of the target for which the design was created.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Today, designers have the task of understanding how to interpret reality and evolving with it. Responsible design is as much a key point today as it was yesterday. Perhaps, today it is addressed more as a universal topic; therefore, it assumes greater value. I believe that we need a push towards a more minimalist and essential design that respects the environment, and above all man.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My sources of inspiration are found everywhere, whether during a day at the beach, or at an exhibition, in front of the TV, or reading a book. In short, creativity comes when you least expect it
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Clean and basic, respectful of the needs of companies but mindful of the needs of the public. I think of design as a code that translates product messages and renders them in the language that people can understand.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I come from Sardinia, a land that has a great history and a vast iconographic heritage. I try to draw from it without trivializing it, but rather, by reinterpreting it in a new or different key.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
On the positive side, I see the possibility of creating new ideas, new forms and new communication codes, while on the negative side, there is a fear of being misinterpreted or misunderstood.
What skills are most important for a designer?
A designer should have the widest possible cultural scope in order to have a broad, neutral view. Naturally, technical skills also count; however, they must always be ready to service the idea.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends. I do not measure the time spent on a project in hours or days.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I love design packaging, particularly for wines. It is a world that I like and that can be very satisfying.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Over time, I have discovered that I am a solitary animal, at least during the idea research and development stage.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I work in design and graphics since 2000 working for several local and national companies. I come from a technical training in architectural design but always giving shape to ideas has always been my dream.
How did you become a designer?
A little by chance, a bit out of necessity. I have always felt the need to express with feelings and colors a feeling to be shared with the rest of the way. Giving shape to ideas has always been my professional aspiration, then seeing people who relate to my designs fills me with joy.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
A mixture of excitement and fear. Surely the phase of analysis, research and development of the idea is the most exciting one, in which many sensations follow each other. Then the physical realization phase is one in which the fears emerge but then dissolve.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Surely the curiosity and the desire to experiment, the cross training and the different experiences.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
My growth path has been very transversal, many experiences from which I have learned teaching. In the future I would like to bring my work to ever greater levels and to measure myself with ever greater challenges.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Try, try, try. Be curious and do not stop at the first difficulties.

My work routine is varied, I do not have a typical day. In the morning I wake up and start the day. That's all
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I read, I surf on web, I watch, I listen. The Internet is an inexhaustible source of news and inspiration. Design trends are important because they dictate the passage of time. Then there are styles that never die.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Non potevo rispondere in modo preciso. Penso che sia una sorta di istinto, di sentimenti, combinato con l'esperienza che ti fa dire: sì, questo è un buon lavoro.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
The music is inspiring, the travels, the people. I live in a simple way, enjoying the little things and drawing inspiration from what surrounds me.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I usually work alone, in some rare team case. My work process is directed towards a very strong rigor and dedication. Those who work with me must share the same ideas
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
First the prestige of the event, according to the possibility of showing my work to the world and the third the pleasure of joining the winners.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
My training has nothing to do with the world of design. I did some technical studies but then I realized that my path was elsewhere and I continued towards graphic design and advertising communication

Good design proves its worth over time. There are objects that last for decades because their design is meant to live for a long time

Good design ensures a longer life to the object or product to which it is applied.

There are no secret ingredients but only study and daily application, open-mindedness and the right amount of creativity
