About Monique Lee

Monique Lee, Interior Design Director of Mas Studio Ltd., columnist on interior designs for Capital Weekly, Hong Kong. She has a passion for art since childhood and has always aspired to design for spatial comfort and simplicity. Her designs are well received by clients as a blend of inspiration and functionality. With solid knowledge in architecture and interior designs, she started her career working with land developers after getting professional qualifications in her early twenties. Year 2009 is a milestone when she founded her own company to further her design career. In 2013, she got her first accolade with one of her designs in an interior design award. Since then, her designs have been gaining recognition in different design awards.

Interview with Monique Lee

From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Care and conservation, protecting the environment is responsibility of everyone. As a designer, we assume an important role to reduce waste from source.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design is not only changing, improving, but evolving to a different attitude to life.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
First, we need to understand the project nature, then, we decide the design style. Next, we proceed to conceptual design draft and 3D graphical presentation. When initial design idea is approved by our customer, we proceed to detailed visual and structural drawing. Finally, we proceed to actual execution of design.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
No boundary for creativity and we could always think outside conventional framework. At the same time, we are always binded by traditions and existing framework.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Ability to communicate with people and convey messages through visual design elements.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Think carefully before you act to avoid rework of design. A good work life balance.
What was your most important job experience?
The whole working experience as a green, junior design until today as a leader of a design team.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Design without specific constrains and everything related to design.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
Holding a master of MEM U OF Tech Sydney, a degree of BAppSC(Arch) Curtin U of Tech. Fellowship, Asian College of Knowledge Management and with over 16 years of experience in design business up to now. I founded Mas Studio Ltd.in Year 2009.
How did you become a designer?
I have a passion for beautiful things since childhood. My designs bring life, love, sense of freedom and passion for life. I keep enriching my knowledge for self-advancement. I wish everyone can feel my designs.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
First and foremost, we need to gather information on environment, requirements, operation and things that may affect the design. We will then bring out the problems and seek solutions. This is the basis on which we create each design. Every design embodies my style. Inspiration may come from the nature or some people or anything.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Process of creating a new design is like day-dreaming. Indulging myself in personal imagination and isolated from external interferences. Based on my insight of the project nature and spontaneous inspiration, I create my designs. The most encouraging is to bring well-being to other people.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Design makes my life. I am just addicted to it. Curiosity is the driven force for new trials and continuous improvements. Passion could overcome all obstacles.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Do your best every day and be prepared for a challenging future. I wish to help the underprivileged through designs.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
My designs bring life. I love to design anything related life. Learn from people and things around me makes me a better designer.
What is your day to day look like?
Live every moment with heart. Sincere with work, people, entertainment, etc.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Creativity is beyond limits. Trends influence you and designs in your distinct style set trends.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
No design is perfect. Every design always has room for improvement though limited by time factor.
What is your biggest design work?
I love every project I made though perfection has yet to be achieved. I wish it comes true in the near future. I always look forward to new projects which are new chances for better designs.
Who is your favourite designer?
Antoni Gaudi. Born and raised in Hong Kong. Strongly influenced by Hong Kong’s unique mixed East and West culture. Contemporary and yet traditional. A well-blended East and West design style
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Hong Kong is home and everything to me. Its cosmopolitan and diverse ethnic cultures breed new concepts and ideas.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Work with heart and enthusiasm or advancement is not possible. We need colleagues, friends and family. Sharing the same vision and mutual trust drive improvement. Mutual respect and team work are indispensable.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
We join charity projects to help the community with our designs. Meanwhile, we always share information related to designs to propagate eco-friendly interior design concepts through our columns in magazines.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
A’ Design Award is a renowned and authoritative design competition. We learn and improve our skills through the whole process. It provides an ideal platform for designers from around the world to compete which impact positively on the design business. Undoubtedly, designers and companies whom are awarded with prizes gain reputation from joining the Award. I am truly honoured and excited to be Designer of the Day and motivate us to contribute to the community with our designs.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have a passion for art since childhood and have always aspired to design for spatial comfort and simplicity. After getting my Degree in Architecture from MEM U OF Tech Sydney, BAppSC(Arch) Curtin U of Tech, I started my career in an interior design company where I worked closely with land developers and gained trust from them. It was very encouraging to me that they regard my designs as a blend of inspiration and functionality. While consolidating my working experience, I furthered my studies in interior design. Looking for a chance to advocate eco-friendly interior design concepts, I decided to found my own company Mas Studio in 2009 which was a turning point in my design career.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
My design brings life and I wish that I could create designs related to all aspects of life.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Keep enriching personal knowledge and strive for self-advancement.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Good designer does a good thing, Great designer makes things better.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Perception and attention and to details, sensitive to problems and offer solutions. Determined to learn and create designs helpful to life.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Create designs to improve life of the people in underdeveloped countries.
What is your biggest design work?
Every design has it’s personality. Always admires each design’s unique aspect.
Who is your favourite designer?
I like every piece of my design while it always has room for improvement.
