Samara 커피 테이블 소개

사마라(Samara)는 분리형 무릎 책상을 갖춘 커피 테이블이다. 그 형태는 사마라라고 불리는 날개 달린 단풍나무 씨앗 꼬투리에서 영감을 받았다. 사마라는 지역에서 조달한 활엽수 원목인 월넛과 체리 원목으로 제작되었으며, 부품들은 CNC 가공을 통해 성형되었다. 직교 집성재(CLT) 다리는 테이블에 강도와 안정성을 부여한다. 레이저로 각인된 잎사귀 문양이 상판 표면을 장식한다. 상단 캡을 돌려 풀면 작은 트레이 테이블들이 분리되며, 이는 작업용 표면이나 식사용 트레이로 활용된다. 테이블의 크기는 너비 1200mm, 높이 430mm이다.

고유 특성: Samara is a multi-functional coffee table that incorporates removable lap desks. Taking inspiration from maple seed pods, the solid wood construction honors the locally sourced lumber from which it was made. The user can either enjoy Samara as a place to rest their drinks and books, or unscrew the top cap to take off the mini tray tables. These desks can then be used as work stations or surfaces off of which they can eat their food.

디자인 과제: The most difficult part of this project was creating a structurally sound piece of furniture with moving components. Cross laminated timbers, a recent innovation in the construction industry, were utilized in the table's legs to enhance the stability of the piece
연구: Multiple prototypes were made to better understand stability and scale before the final CNC piece was built. Looking into new wood composition technologies, namely Cross Laminated Timber construction, was necessary to achieve a quality result. Collaboration with professionals in the field of Forestry allowed for the success of this product.
영감: This project was meant to honor locally sourced Indiana hardwoods. The main form of the design was inspired by the propeller-like shape of maple seed pods, known as Samara. Samara are winged fruits or seeds which provided the perfect basis for a wood focused design. Furthermore, Samara's cherry and walnut construction showcases the beauty of local timber.
프로젝트 기간: Started in August 2018 and finished in December 2018
운영 흐름: Samara operates primarily as a coffee table, one which acts as a focal point for any room. However, the top piece of Samara can be removed to gain access to the removable lap desks. This allows the coffee table to transform from a static piece of furniture to individual working/eating trays.
