Designer of the Day Interview

19 June 2024

It started from my hobby of drawing since middle school, then I began to learn how to edit and manipulate photos from a computer. This makes me focus on pursuing this field by continuing my study at a vocational high school in the multimedia study program, majoring in information technology at college. And finally, I decided to pursue my career as a UI/UX designer to date. Will I always be a designer? In my opinion, this will follow the developments & needs of the future, even in our daily lives we can be said to be "designers" in our own lives.

I feel a lot of emotions when I design but the most I feel are enthusiasm and inner excitement.

Besides Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Problem-solving are some of the most crucial skills for designers. Personal Branding and Marketing skills are also needed as a sales value for a designer.

My dream design project is to be able to design something that can be truly useful for many people and can have an impact on their lives (Increasing the life's quality of the people).

Uncertainty and change will always exist in every line of life, and as designers, the way we respond to this is to continue learning, persevering, and adapting to existing developments and changes. This is indeed very challenging, but if we are able to get through it, we can be called a winner.

The best practice in anything, including in the world of design, is to learn from mistakes and adapt them to improve our standards in the future so that we can be even better. and also learn from other people and our competitors, competing healthily is also very important. Following existing standards is also a wise choice.

Based on my experience, It depends on every project that I've worked on. Sometimes I follow new design trends for the project which is felt to have to follow existing design trends in order to get the attention of users, On the other hand, the originality of design style provides authenticity to the project that will be produced later. whatever that is the good design is one that remains over time.

Based on my experience as a UI/UX Designer, From the technical aspects the design is created based on standardization and complete documentation, making it easier for the team to maintain the design, and seen from the results, a good design gets a good response from users, which means it works as it should and can become a metric for the product or project itself.

When the project/product itself is successful helps people to achieve more.

When I designed for social media application (mobile-based application) that based on a user interest model. Because of this is related to a variety of users where they will find each other who have the same interests as the community. Which makes a lot of features in that application. besides that, this is also quite challenging as it requires a balance between business goals and needs that are relatable to users.

Steve Jobs. because of his visionary and evolutionary thinking.

1. International Recognition 2. Massive media engagement 3. Networking opportunity. Actually, there are so many more that could be included in the list. However, in my opinion, these three things above can represent the benefits obtained from winning a big award event. Design awards and competitions would be contribute to my next career journey as a designer through winner benefits they have provided. In my opinion, participating in an event like this is also relevant for the development of a designer's career path because their competition system is designed in such a way as to present standard methods and professional judges who are competent in their field. I feel honored and an immense joy when I am the Designer of the Day.

Design Interview

25 May 2024 · Xana Os Design UI

the design of XANA OS is based on several mobile operating systems that I have used before (if I may mention the brands, let's say Windows Phone, Samsung One UI, and iOS). According to my personal experience and analysis, several of the operating systems above have advantages and uniqueness. Each of these makes them loved by their users. I don't know why I was inspired and encouraged to create a mobile OS design inspired by the three OS above into a new mobile OS concept by taking the existing advantages of these three.

My focus in making this project is fairly simple, namely designing a mobile operating system concept that is unique and fresh, which is not yet available on the market. also what I want to achieve through my design is to maximize recognition and exposure both from the design side itself and personally as a designer so that it can reach more parties as a selling point for me.

My future plans for this design are to continue to develop it better as time goes by, and there is also the possibility that I will sell this design exclusively to a party who is interested with my design.

This project started in November 2020 and was completed in February 2021 (Phase I). At that time I felt like I wanted to nominate it straight away. Still, after I thought about it, it didn't matter if the nomination was delayed as long as the development of this project was ongoing to improve the quality of the project itself until it was delayed around 2 years and continued again in early 2024 to improve the design before this year's nomination period deadline closed.

My design is currently still a concept and has not been used or realized. However, if in the future there is a company that is interested in my design or collaborates with me to create a design like the one above, then I am ready to collaborate with them or sell to them.

My encouragement is that I see the development of mobile operating systems is currently very fast, but on average the existing designs more or less follow each other and look monotonous until finally, the urge arises for me to experiment to create a design that is unique and also fresh.

I made this design independently.

because it is still a concept, the target could be companies operating in the field of mobile technology or IT companies. If the design is realized then the target customer is almost all groups of people.

What differentiates this concept from similar concepts is that the UX design that I created for the navigation completely uses a swipe gesture, which means basic functions such as a control to go back, go to the home screen, see the task screen, etc. done by sweeping the edge of the screen. why? because this can make the existing navigation process more seamless, sophisticated, and easier. therefore also pay attention to my design does not have a back button in it.

for this, honestly, I give the name of this design XANA to sound cool and different, there is no special meaning to it.

I used Figma software to design the UI and UX parts. to advance prototyping I use Protopie.

The unique aspect of this design lies on the navigation section where navigation such as back to the previous screen, back to the home screen, viewing the tasks screen, etc. are completely done by swipe gesture. why? it simple. because this can make the appearance of the UI which becomes more minimalist but also makes the UX more seamless, sophisticated, and easier. Imagine, if all this time the layout of the back button has always been placed in the top left corner to reach it, this is indeed trivial, but if there is a large device, are our fingers long enough to reach it? Maybe, but it will require more effort for users to reach it. So to make it easier, navigation in XANA OS completely uses a swipe gesture where if the user wants to return to the previous page, for example, this can be done by swiping the corner of the screen. This may make the user have to adapt at first, but it will only take a while for the user to learn until finally the user will discover how easy this kind of navigation is.

For this project, I designed it from start to finish independently.

The role of technology in creating design concepts is certainly very large and basically, technology is the main container for this kind of interactive UI design concept. especially for the touchscreen technology section.

In particular, there are not too many portions or it has to look like complicated research. For the initial idea, I designed it based on the analysis I carried out by observing and looking at reviews about operating system technology to get the right insight for my project. and for the design validation process, I conducted a simple survey to get feedback from potential users and improved it with their feedback.

The challenge I faced when designing this concept was how to combine various existing mobile operating system designs (especially the ones I have used) into a concept that is unique and also has its own characteristics. On the other hand, because this concept is quite big, another challenge is how my design must also have a similarity side like a mobile OS in general for users so that users can quickly get to know and adapt to my design concept, which in the end must be able to make it easier for users.

I see that of the many mobile technology design concepts in particular, no mobile operating system concept has been included in this competition, let alone those who have worked on it independently even for the design concept.

What I can learn from this particular project is how a designer can design a good design concept, which can make it easier for users to use the function of the design. Even though it is still a concept, this is the crucial stage in determining whether the concept is suitable for publication or not.

When working on a project, whatever it is, and even if it is still a concept if you have the belief that one day the concept can provide inspiration or even be realized and be useful for many people, then believe in it and work on it wholeheartedly.

Design sets the trends. This has happened a lot in many design lines in our society.

substantial, because I design for the products related to technology itself.

For the software itself, I always use Figma for designing UI/UX, Adobe Illustrator for Illustration, Spreadsheet or Ms. Word for the requirements, and ClickUp for Project Management.

The ideal design partner for me is a partner with whom not only can work together as a team but also with whom I can exchange thoughts and ideas and become a united and harmonious co-design in achieving the same goals.

I have several recommendations for good design books, including: Don't Make Me Think (Steve Krug), 100 Things Every Designer Needs To Know About People (Susan M. Weinschenk, Ph.D.), The Design of Everyday Things (Donald A. Norman), Human Centered Design Toolkit 2nd edition (IDEO), SPRINT (Jake Knapp), UX for Lean Startups (Laura Klein), Lean UX (Jeff Gothelf with Josh Seiden).

My favorite colors are RGB (Red, Green, Blue) but mostly my favorite one is blue. My favorite place is the place that can bring me to a serenity that can lead me to drift away in it.

In the future, design (widely) will likely collaborate with technology to create a reality that exists like in movies, becoming a real civilization.

In my opinion, this will follow the developments & needs of the future, even in our daily lives we can be said to be "designers" in our own lives.

For me, design is something that not only can be enjoyed visually but also has a function designed to help human life better.

I usually design a web-based and mobile-based application related to the business field to help the processes for companies operating in the retail, manufacturing, trading, and mining sectors.

For the first time, I designed a graphic design such as a banner, calendar, name card, and even digital signage templates.

I usually make the most creative and wild imaginations at nights when the sun sleeps and darkness deepens. That's because it's the only time I'm not interrupted, and I can focus more on my favorite things at that moment.

Aesthetic and technical aspects are so crucial to me.

I feel a lot of emotions when I design but the most I feel are enthusiasm and inner excitement.

An immense joy and satisfaction.

The successful design is a design that both visually and functionally can help human life be more efficient and better.

It`s functionality and aesthetics aspects.

As a designer, our responsibility is how we can help the aspects of life through creation that can be enjoyed visually and have a good function/purpose simultaneously.

In my opinion, design is flexible. It can follow developments and changes over time. In the future, design (widely) will likely collaborate with technology to create a reality that exists like in movies, becoming a real civilization.

I never held any art/design exhibition. But the next one would be Exhibition of the A’design award competition.

My source of inspiration is from great real products that I use in my daily life. In developing my creativity I usually create personal projects as a process of training and honing the sharpness of my skills, reading some books or watching educational that related to the design field, and also learning from the past (even from the other experience) is also important.

Actually, my design style is enough flexible. it is adapting new design trends sometimes or following the client's requests. but usually, I prefer a simple style design. I believe that design should be simple and easy to use for the users.

I always try to do my best, so companies have always trusted me. This has led to a lasting agreement.

Requirement gathering, cultivate ideas and consult with the team, Implementation process design, and finally performance.

My laptop, Smartphone, Headphones, Motorcycle, Toys.

Besides Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Problem-solving are some of the most crucial skills for designers. Personal Branding and Marketing skills are also needed as a sales value for a designer.

Hand sketching, and designing using software design There are many sources and mediums that can be a source of inspiration for me in designing, but usually the main inspiration is from real good products that have been used by many people.

I manage my time, especially for work by making a priority list. Categories it from urgent priority to low priority of the project.

It depends on the design project and its complexity.

How much will it cost?

As a company designer, I did a lot of projects for companies in many sectors. Such as retail, manufacturing, trading, and mining sectors. As a freelancer, I did a project for my friends, abroad customers, and for regional organisation.

When I designed for social media application (mobile-based application) that based on a user interest model. I work mostly by myself but I work, always with others to add expertise and knowledge before, during and in the realization of designs.
