About Nevi Kinetic Desk Lamp

Designed by Andrei LiLo, Nevi is a desk lamp built around a self centering kinetic system. Constructed from hand finished Aisi 304 stainless steel, the lamp features a spherical base and a slender vertical stem. It functions as a task light with a focused beam, while also responding to touch with a gentle oscillation that returns the object to its vertical axis. The project extends to its aluminum packaging, which is designed to transform into a secondary ambient light. Released as a numbered limited edition, Nevi explores the relationship between kinetic behavior and material presence.

About Andrei Ananenka

Andrei Ananenka is an independent designer based in Minsk, working in lighting and product design. His practice includes custom lighting for interiors, limited-edition objects, and exploratory projects that connect material research with everyday use. Guided by clarity of construction, tactile quality, and long product life, he approaches light as both a functional and spatial element. Across residential, public, and collectible contexts, he develops pieces that combine engineering logic, careful detailing, and a restrained formal language.

About A' Design Award & Competition

Organized annually since 2008, A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The philanthropic mission of the A' Design Award is to advance society through good design, by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Nominations are peer reviewed and evaluated anonymously by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. Eligible laureates receive the A' Design Prize, which includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, uploading a work and receiving a preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details

Unique Properties
Nevi is a sculptural desk lamp built around the principle of self-centering equilibrium. It combines tactile interaction, focused light, and hand-finished materiality within a restrained vertical form. The lamp is made from Aisi 304 stainless steel and finished entirely by hand. The lower sphere is satin brushed for durability and a soft tactile feel, while the upper part of the base is mirror polished to amplify reflections and movement. The project extends beyond the lamp itself through its second-life aluminum packaging. Designed according to the same self-centering logic, the package becomes a secondary ambient light after unboxing.
Inspiration
Nevi draws inspiration from the classic roly poly toy, a familiar symbol of balance, resilience, and return. The project reinterprets this childhood archetype through contemporary lighting design, transforming a playful kinetic principle into a refined and minimal object. Its character emerges from the contrast between a visually grounded spherical base and a slender vertical stem. The intention was to create a lamp that feels calm, responsive, and alive, an object that reacts to touch and always returns to its own vertical equilibrium.
Research
The research behind Nevi focused on how controlled movement can transform a static object into a more engaging and meaningful presence. Studies of stable equilibrium and center of mass displacement informed the development of the self-centering system, with particular attention paid to the smoothness, duration, and perceived quality of oscillation. Optical research explored how to deliver a precise and comfortable beam with high color fidelity. Sustainability research led to the development of the second-life packaging concept, shifting the package from a temporary container to a lasting functional object within the interior.
Challenge
The central challenge of the project was invisible engineering: preserving an extremely slender and calm visual profile while integrating a weighted kinetic system, a focused lighting core, and passive thermal management. Developing a self-centering mechanism for a 550 mm vertical lamp on a 100 mm spherical base required careful calibration of internal mass distribution and balance. Another challenge was achieving a precise and seamless transition between satin brushed and mirror polished finishes on a monolithic stainless steel form.
Realization and Technology
Nevi combines precision manufacturing with hand-finishing techniques. The lamp body is produced from Aisi 304 stainless steel using cnc machining, followed by multiple stages of manual finishing. The dual-surface base is created through separate satin brushing and mirror polishing processes, emphasizing both tactile and reflective qualities. The lighting core integrates a 3W Cree led module with a 20 degree optical lens, while the stainless steel body also functions as a passive heat sink. The aluminum packaging incorporates an internal weighted base to reproduce the same self-centering behavior as the lamp itself.
Operation and Interaction
Nevi functions both as a precise task light and as a tactile object. Its 20 degree beam and cri 90 plus light quality provide focused illumination for reading, writing, and desk activities. The user is invited to touch and gently move the lamp, setting it into a smooth controlled oscillation before it returns to its resting vertical position. This subtle movement introduces an emotional layer to the experience of light, turning a static product into a responsive companion. During motion, the polished surface of the base captures and reflects its surroundings, reinforcing the sense of dynamic balance.
