This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.

Regarding Trimas Refill Pod Jar

The growing demand for sustainability is driving growth in the refill market, yet many jars lack premium appeal and ease of use. Conventional designs rely on films or liners that are discarded after opening, reducing branding value and requiring two handed operation. A refill pod jar with a flip top lid enables effortless one handed access. The product can be dispensed directly from the top without removing the main cap, and the empty pod can be easily replaced. Tethered caps and fewer components support convenience, branding, compliance, and sustainability.

Design Details

Unique Properties
A versatile, sustainable, and customizable refill pod jar for creams, balms, gummies, and vitamins. Its flip-top lid allows easy one-handed use, unlike traditional screw caps. Users can access the product without removing the main cap, while maintaining branding space. The tethered lid stays attached, reducing waste. A tamper-evident ring ensures safety, breaking on first use without discarding any components, supporting sustainability.
Inspiration
Sustainability is driving growth in refillable packaging as brands and consumers seek eco-friendly options. However, many refillable jars lack a premium feel, often using plastic units that limit branding and reduce appeal. These refills may rattle, detach, or require two hands, affecting usability. Users often must remove the outer cap and then open the refill, adding extra steps that reduce convenience and overall experience.
Research
In 2024, the EU introduced the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), requiring major retailers to allocate 10% of store space to refills by 2030, with countries like France targeting 20%. Refill is becoming a legal requirement, not just a sustainability trend. While demand for eco-friendly packaging is rising, many refillable jars fail to deliver a premium experience, relying on liners, limiting branding, and creating inconvenience through loose, noisy, or two-handed designs.
Challenge
Key challenges include ensuring leak proof and tamper evident sealing, securing the pod without rattling while keeping replacement easy, and selecting sustainable yet durable materials like PP or PET. Balancing premium aesthetics with branding opportunities, along with designing for convenient one-handed use, makes the process complex but critical for user friendly and sustainable solutions.
Realization and Technology
The refill pod jar consists of three parts: the cap, the refill pod, and the jar. The cap and refill pod with a flip-top lid are made of PP, and the jar is planned in PP or PET. A mono material PP solution is being considered to enhance recyclability and sustainability.
Operation and Interaction
This innovative design enhances user convenience with its flip-top pod lid, allowing for one-handed use. The refill pod jar enables users to access the product contents from the top without removing the main jar cap. Once the refill pod is empty, it can easily be replaced by opening the cap, removing the empty pod, and inserting a new refill pod jar .
Project Duration and Location
The Refill Pod Jar started conceptualizing and in Nov 2024 and finished in Oct 2025 in Noida, India.
