Challenge
The challenge was to merge two UNESCO heritage applications, Jingdezhen porcelain and Lidu brewing, into one cohesive design. Research focused on Yuan Dynasty blue and white motifs, underglaze techniques, and movable type printing to authentically integrate cultural elements. Balancing artistic detail with usability required engineering precision, especially for the engraved alloy cap and rotating case. The goal was to create packaging that feels both luxurious and functional, serving as a cultural bridge between tradition and modernity.
Realization and Technology
The bottle is crafted in high grade ceramic with underglaze blue painting to evoke Yuan Dynasty porcelain. A golden seal is embedded on the body for prestige. The cap is made from metal alloy, engraved with movable type inspired characters to preserve the story. The outer case uses rigid board wrapped in silk textured material, decorated with blue dragon reliefs and finished with gold stamping. A rotating opening structure enhances both display and durability.
Operation and Interaction
The packaging is designed to create a ceremonial experience. The rigid case with a rotating opening reveals the bottle like a showcase, enhancing display value. The ceramic body, decorated with blue and white dragon motifs, offers a tactile connection to heritage. The metal cap, engraved with movable type characters, provides both grip and storytelling detail. From opening the case, unveiling the bottle, to pouring the liquor, each step is infused with cultural symbolism, turning consumption into ritual.
