This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.

Regarding Sprout 3D Printed Bicycle

Sprout is a bicycle produced by three-dimensional printing. The frame is shaped through topology optimization, which places material only where it is needed and lowers the total amount used. Static stress analysis with the finite element method verifies the stability of the frame structure. The final model is printed in high density nylon. The bicycle measures 1630 mm in length, 600 mm in width and 832 mm in height. Printing removes the need for costly molds, so each frame can follow an individual design.

About the A' 3D Printed Forms and Products Design Award

The A' 3D Printing Design Award is an international 3D printing design competition recognizing good 3D printed works by designers and creators worldwide. The competition is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to 3D printing designers, industrial design studios, product designers and 3D printing brands from all countries. Entries typically include products designed and realized with latest technologies, 3D printed products, prosthetics, architectural models, jewelry and furniture. Awarded 3D printed designs are published at https://dezigners.org/design-category/3d-printing

About A' Design Award & Competition

A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade organized annually since 2008. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The A' Design Award has a philanthropic mission to advance society through good design by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Entries are peer reviewed and anonymously evaluated by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. The A' Design Prize granted to eligible laureates includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, the upload of a work and the preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details

Unique Properties
Bicycles made by traditional technology are often single in shape and lack of characteristics. After the introduction of 3D printing technology, the bicycle after topology optimization not only has a better lightweight design, but also gets rid of the high mold cost, and carries out an industrial mode of producing one piece for one design or even one piece for multiple designs.
Inspiration
According to the investigation, in the long days of steel and aluminum tubes, the basic shape of the bicycle was a variety of subtle variations of the diamond frame under the linear structure. Bicycle product modeling language is relatively simple, in addition to the details of the process, the biggest surprise may be coating. From the point of view of design, it is hoped that through 3D printing design, people can obtain bicycles with better stability and more personality rather than the bicycles produced in industrial batches in the past. So that people's bikes get the best lightweight and reduce the loss of more resources.
Research
Research objectives: 1. How to optimize the structure of bicycle 2. Research methods of existing 3D printing materials and technologies and topology optimization methods: 1. Field investigation data analysis 2. Online data collection results: With the introduction of 3D printing technology, metal materials can be made into the form of car frames, just like sculptures, without the constraints of traditional processes. At the same time, 3D printing technology can get rid of the high cost of mold, and carry out the industrial model of one design producing one piece, or even multiple designs producing only one piece. Even the same design can be printed with different materials.
Challenge
The most difficult part is the topology optimization of the bicycle, because it includes related mechanics such as statics. It's a whole new area for us, it's a whole new challenge. The second is to verify the feasibility of material technology, which takes a long time, the cost of changing material technology, the difficulty of production, and the acceptance of people in real life. These are the considerations for this design study.
Realization and Technology
The structure of the bicycle is optimized by means of topology optimization, and the design is carried out on the basis of the optimized model. Finally, the bicycle model is made of high density nylon material through 3D printing
Operation and Interaction
By using a professional design system, the topology optimization of the bicycle frame is carried out, and then the optimization of the corresponding frame prototype is completed according to the corresponding optimization results, and the bicycle is produced by 3D printing. The bicycle frame after topology optimization not only reasonably plans the distribution of the material structure, reduces the amount of material, but also reduces the energy consumption rate and the emission of harmful substances in the exhaust.

The project started in March 2021 and ended in May 2021. Project duration: 2 months. Location: Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.
