About Suzhou Creek Waterfront and Campus Landscape

Suzhou Creek is a waterfront and campus landscape design in Shanghai. The project covers about 93,600 square meters and includes about 900 meters of riverside frontage beside a university campus. Buildings that weakened the overall style were removed and the riverside area was widened. Steps were replaced by gentle slopes to remove height differences and enlarge the pedestrian space. Historical buildings and mature trees were retained. The former footpath and planting strip became a combined campus landscape, shared space and riverside promenade open to the public.

Design Details

Unique Properties
Changning campus of East China University of political science and law is located in the east of Changning District, Shanghai and in the north of Yuyuan Road Historical and cultural style area. It is 900 meters along the riverside. It is a rare non industrialized area along the Suzhou River. It has unique characteristics and portal effect. The transformation and improvement of its riverside line will be of great significance to the construction of the whole area along the Suzhou River.
Inspiration
Born and prospered by water, Shanghai has realized the connection project of Suzhou River by the end of 2020. How to create a distinctive high-quality waterfront public space on the basis of connection and open the important node areas along the coast, including the section of East China University of political science and law, has become a key problem. Meanwhile, East China University of political science and law has important humanistic history and architectural art value.
Research
Our team deeply collected and combed the historical evolution, historical landscape characteristics and the development of spatial pattern of the East China University of political science and law. At the same time, we evaluated the historical buildings in memory from the aspects of completion year, historical style, architectural function and historical characteristics, and put forward the design concept of restoring the historical space pattern, opening the campus public landscape and preserving and protecting ancient and famous trees.
Challenge
Demolished the modern buildings with poor style and which has affected the overall landscape, and expanded riverside area. Eliminated steps, eliminated height difference through gentle slope, and greatly increase pedestrian space. On the premise that the structure of flood control wall remains unchanged, raise the height of riverside footpath and enhance the landscape vision. The flood control wall, ground and historical building facade shall be provided with signs to show the history and Humanities of Chinese politics.
Realization and Technology
The design concept is to shape East China University of political science and law, a "century old campus and the Pearl of the Su River", into the most open public space along the Su River, the most elegant historical style and the most beautiful campus landscape. The landscape goal is to create a unique landscape form of "courtyard in the garden, garden in the courtyard". By retaining and protecting the spatial pattern, historical buildings and landscape environment, the overall style of campus is taken as a part of the landscape along the Suzhou River to open the scenery to the public.
Operation and Interaction
The design fully excavates the existing resources. It combines the originally independent campus with the riverside footpath, and relies on the unique Chinese and western excellent historical buildings of the campus, so as to "highlight the architectural style of national treasures, optimize the riverside landscape quality; excavate the humanistic elements of the campus and activate the riverside humanistic space; ensure the safety of the campus interface and establish a security management system" With the three design concepts as the core, the riverside footpaths that were originally narrow, single landscape and lack of public service facilities were comprehensively combed and rearranged...
Project Duration and Location
The design of this project has began from March to May in 2021. The construction has lasted for 5 months, ended in September 2021.
Specifications
The Design area is about 93600㎡, including the length of the waterfront landscape is about 900m.
